You can get beige subway tiles and brown grout, if you think that would work better. The subway/hexagonal tile combo is a can't-miss.

I love that campfire lamp, but at 130 euros, it seems both pricey and fragile for a toddler's room!

Love Wegman's. Can we have a post about its wonders? Seriously--and I don't even live anywhere near a Wegman's!

I might disagree with the stroller one, depending on how much you will use it. Our second child will be using her brother's stroller, and it definitely feels...usable, but used. Other gear, on the other hand, holds up well to reuse or doesn't get too beat up in the first place. I think any given neighborhood only needs three Exersaucers in rotation at a time--nobody should buy a new one. Ditto baby bath tubs, size 0-3 month clothing, co-sleepers...

Now that I am married to a Christian, I miss the traditional movie-and-Chinese food on Christmas day (actually, we always had Indian, but you get the idea.). I do love all of the Christmas traditions, though--the special meals, the Christmas crackers and their corny jokes, the cookies and mince pies (my husband's family is British)--and I am enjoying introducing our children to some new traditions, like goIng over our holiday cards from years past.

I agree--war toys are definitely out of style as far as I am concerned.

As for the rotary phone, my son loves it--but then, he's also into watching episodes of "The Muppet Show" and Mr. Hooper-era "Sesame Street," so maybe he's not the best litmus test of anachronism...

We went to a restaurant supply store and got my son all sorts of stuff to play "E's Cafe"--a small tray, table settings, waiter's apron, bread basket, table nber, pad for taking orders, even the little folder you put the check in (to which we added some play money and a fake credit card from some junk mail.) We made up a menu of his favorite foods and slipped it into a vinyl menu holder, and collected up some of his play food to add to the kit. He still loves it two years later!
Any "real" materials are a big hit with this age--office supplies, doctor's equipment, cooking stuff...

I don't know if they count as dinner parties, exactly, but we have started holding weekly Shabbat dinners. When possible, we invite friends to joIn us; other times, it's just our family. Bringing back this tradition from my childhood has allowed me to make time for special meals eaten at a leisurely pace-- just the point of a dinner party, I think. MakIng it a weekly ritual motivates me to pull something together, even after a hectic week. Hooray for dinners with friends, whether or not you call them "parties"!
