I am in between these two. I like a softened modern style, but I don't really like minimalism. For instance, I have Possini lamps--a cloud chandelier and a floor lamp with a white shade that looks like a mum. Often the furniture at CB2 is too hard and angular, the colors too strong, and more often I like the furniture at West Elm. I like soft sofas with straight arms, not the curled arm. I like a bit of French country and Greek island, a bit of whimsy. My new apartment in a brand new modern condo, and it has dictated some choices. I've been thinking of my decorating of it as a modern beach house, despite being a block from the toxic Gowanus Canal. Imagination is important.

I bet if you showed these pictures to a carpenter, the step by step would materialize.

One of the things I like about the after is that it appears as if the sofa has been reupholstered in that beautiful turquoise fabric, instead of being replaced. I am looking to buy a good sofa in an aqua beach glass color, and the sofa in the photo above is a good, well made sofa that can be redone as times and interests change. (Good bones, new outfits.) I don't have too much of a problem with the before shot because you can tell that the colors of the furnishings are monochromatic and dark. While the curtains are still white, they have been changed on at least one window. I love the colors of the room. I usually like only bits of Danish Modern instead of an entire room, but the colors make this a very inviting living room.

I, too, am mesmerized by that first picture of the unicorns high above a stately hallway, and by mesmerized I don't mean I am in support of those taxidermy white horses with the horns added. I just like the look of it at the same time that I don't like the way it was done.

While I love abstract clouds, I think that it is between #2 and 6, and that 6 doesn't compete as much. So, #6. The yellow one is nice but doesn't have enough correspondence in the room.

Shazz is right, Milosmom. Most often, if you renovate the one who benefits the most is the landlord if the renovation is considered to be an improvement. You have to check with the landlord because it is his property. Of course, you may consider it to be worth it, as some have commented, because you want your space to work for you long term. I lived in an apartment that had uneven walls and they looked better with color paint than stark white, and I painted them, then painted them white again before moving. Apartment is just a separate living space within a anger building, by definition, and can rented or bought.

I want to see more of the apartment. The decorating phase should be up next, yes?

Beautiful, well-planned and inspiring. That last picture made me think you probably did leave the bed part of the sofa open most of the time. I lived for five years in a rental studio about that size but not as successfully. I have since bought a place with lots of space but I always love the idea of tiny homes. I was not as successful at it. At first I got a studio sofa futon which was twin size, and later got a love seat from Jennifer Convertibles that I still own. The bed part was not memory foam, however. I ended up scrunching on the sofa for sleep rather than undo the bed every night, but I also had not planned the space as well as you. Beautiful floors. A great inspiration. You get nice light which is the major enlarger, mood enhancer. Brava!

Excuse the typos in my message above, a result of the dastardly auto-correct. A period ends a sentence too soon. Same gets replaced with Ame. Eeek!

Personality is always interesting, and here in the comments it is, too. The Before shows a room without design, but bare color and emphasis on. A soft bed beside the lit window. The After photo has a decorated room with an upholstered headboard in the Ame color as the wooden headboard, a change in paint color, and many details added to the room to give in a setting and to make it a setting, too. I love the photo of the ocean above the bed, the books and vases, and the table--which may or may not have been there previously. I think that the After is an improvement without much work resulting in a relaxing bed and a vibrant room. In the Before bedroom, the emphasis was sleep. In the Aafter bedroom, the emphasis is waking to a new day.
