We got gifted some family display shelves over the holidays--they're lovely and good wood, but not at all in line with our current decor. I am going to completely revamp them (in white and silver), and them in the dining room which is cruelly lacking in personality, and start filling them with photos, our illustration collection, and other decorative elements.

Thanks for the tip!
I think that's two recommendations on orchids, so I may try them... but with limited hope, since the monster eats the fat waxy leaves of succulent with gusto. I'm also planning on a huge inside mint planter -- yes my cat will eat that, but mint may fill a big enough planter that it will not show too much, and (mostly) that will distract him from other plants...

I have been trying to brainstorm some replacements for flowers, since one of my cat is a terror of houseplants too (he nibbles, he doesn't dig, though)... The list so far:
- pointy cacti (he will eat succulents, though); we already have some, so probably not my final choice.
- terrariums and air plants
- artificial flowers - specifically, there are some origami projects which I think are quite cute
- install a wall planter (like this: http://www.ikeahackers.net/2011/03/cat-safe-planter.html; a birdcage could do too) or other cat-inaccessible plant stand

Nets over plants look ugly to me, and deterrents have not worked for us so far (cayenne, citrus, etc.). Any other ideas?
