Wow, Jessica here - thank you all for the comments! I took some pictures of where we are post-wallpaper and painting here:

Pardon the hanging light fixture - we're planning on switching that out.

All these comments really brought home that the biggest problem in the space isn't the planter, its the stairs. I checked under the carpet last night, and there is nice hardwood under there, so the carpet will probably come up. There is uglyish tiling at the bottom of the stairs will also be replaced, and then I guess we'll figure out how to deal with the banister and spindles, etc. That will all probably come in a few months though, because this is our first house and there are a few more pressing projects on the agenda (mostly, a fenced backyard for our dogs!)

Again, thank you all. Some great insight here.

enishmarati - I think it definitely depends on where in NJ you are. I visited LBI a few weeks ago to help friends demo their house, and no trees down (well, probably not many trees in the first place!)

Where I live in Morris County, there are trees EVERYWHERE. A large tree fell on my car, totalling it, and another fell on our garage. A third fell and took out the utility lines to our house. My husband and I saved a few of the stumps from the tree that destroyed my car - they are in the attic drying out and hopefully in a year or so, we can use them for DIY. That way, we'll always have our "Sandy" stumps...
