Here's what I do each night to keep the clutter at bay - set my timer to 7 minutes then run around the house like an insane woman with a garbage bag picking up all stray paper/etc. and dumping the bathroom garbage pail into it as well. Then I do the odds and ends - move shoes from the door, hang coats, move dishes to the dishwasher. Generally the timer goes off before I'm done, but I can then decide if I've done enough or if I want to continue. I usually continue if I'm in the middle of a chore, but never go over ten minutes. While this may not work for everyone, it definitely keeps things in order for me.
