My sweet Siamese cat, now deceased, was toilet trained for several years. It was awesome and easy. We bought one of these kits from the pet store where you basically put a tray between your toilet and toilet lid with litter and slowly cut a circle larger and larger until the cat is using the seat and peeing. No litter or tray to buy, no waste....we did clean our toilet daily with sanitizing wipes though.

Unfortunately when I moved in with a new roommate who had cats who used a litter box, she stopped using the toilet and used their litter box. Major bummer. When I got married and tried to toilet train again it was not happening :( I think it's important to do it when they are under a year old and more flexible.

A funny aside for cat lovers - she used to be very vocal (as Siamese can be) before she'd use the toilet. It was almost like she was telling us - "ok, I'm going to be in here. I need privacy." ha! After several months it was a great feeling a trust and bonding to have her jump up and go while you'd be brushing your teeth or whatever and not need that vocalization for privacy :)

I so appreciate this article. I was born and raised in Cincinnati and now live in Texas. I had no idea! Both are such important landmarks and Union Terminal holds so many memories for me growing up. It is a spectacular building and landmark! Our family is going home for a visit this summer and my kids haven't been before - changing that this summer thanks to this news! Thanks Apartment Therapy!

This is great! I'd love to see more. I love how a budget makes one more particular about their splurges and material items and the minimal result is great. I appreciated what you wrote as well. You should be very proud!

I agree with all of these and in terms of #1 backing up your hard drive, I'd highly recommend to anyone to have it done automatically and off-site with a company like Crash Plan. Not only does this happen automatically and you don't have to do a darn thing, but it's off-site so if you have any kind of house emergency that threatens your things (fire, tornado, etc) you know you are safe regardless. It's peace of mind. Of course I learned this after losing about 2 years of family photos, including my second child's first year of life - OY!

6 Small, Random Efforts That Pay Off Big at Home

Five years ago our small family (husband, toddler, and I) moved half way around the world to the United Arab Emirates to a small city an hour outside of Dubai. My husband had gotten a grant to do his dissertation research and we were incredibly lucky to have a connection with the university there to give us housing.

Was it perfect? Nope. However we didn't have to pay a thing. No rent, no utilities and it came furnished. This was great for us living on a small amount of grant money. Sure the furniture was not to our perfect liking and it was small with no outside space for our kiddo. We were constantly nervous of noise we made with all the tile in the place. Our situation is different but same idea - place assigned to us. We didn't see it before we came. Amazingly we only came with 6 suitcases for the year. What an adventure that was.

Great place! I love it. I do agree there is a bit too much furniture though. I'd nix the white loveseat for seating that is more compact like stools that stack.
