Formica is what we went with when we did our remodel less that 5 years ago. But I put marble on a small island for candy making. Now the marble and formica look the same. There are patterns that look just like marble and granite. My formica looks like new, cleans easy and lowered the cost of the remodel by about 5,000 dollars. I did a half batch, in a cast iron skillet, poured it into a 9 inch buttered cake pan with non stick foil. No problems, but it did take awhile for the butter to get sucked into the boiling sugar mixture. I plan to drop the butter down to 7 ounces for the half batch. The sample I poured into a small glass disc turned out great without being sugar gritty. I got it the color of creamy peanut butter and it's lovely. Holiday Treat Recipe: Skillet Toffee |

I worked at Whole Foods and shopping in the middle of the week does help, a list helps and the 365 brand, esp the olive oil, rocks. We are always pleased with the wine specials and if something is "off" or not up to standards, bring it back and get the refund. Check out the pet food, can and bag. It's not from China. Shop careful and mindfully and you can have very nice meals. The bulk bins rock, esp for flour and other things you may be trying for the first time, you can purchase just what you need to find out if that recipe needs to go into regular rotation for your family. The Maker Mark one in the Sam's Holiday catalog 2009 ran about 40 dollars and is a 6 quart and everyone who sees it thinks it a Le Creuset. No chipping or enamel loss. I have a smaller Rachel Ray in blue and it shows some wear after 4 years but still no chips or enamel loss. I have 2 cast iron pots I inherited and one small Le Creuset for oatmeal and sauces. All go into heavy rotation during the fall and winter months with soup, stews and big batches of baked beans. When we camp, we used the small Lodge with the feet and spiked lid. 5 Great Dutch Ovens: And 10 Recipes to Put Them to Work |

We will be grilling, pork and chicken. I have a bag of yellow squash that will be grilled with the meat and lots of salads. It's very hot and I plan to have things done in the kitchen early and do a quick reheat of the food as needed. I made lots of sugar syrup for drinks and sorbets. What's Cooking This Weekend? Of course, I explore topics in depth. If I want superficial, I'll go to sites that skim. I want information. lots of it, to process. I am a trained baker, in depth is a good thing. I plant my own garden, so I better know what grows best here. I dry my own herbs, so I better know how to do it and read on how others do these things. My mom called her's Jezebel and she used an apricot/pineapple/horseradish mix. Bama Preserves creates the apricot/pineapple preserves (or at least they did) so all you had to do is mix the horseradish in. She would plop the block, spoon the preserves over and we didn't do Ritz, it was some other cracker.
