I love my ipod for times like that, MissHoneychurch...I pop in the earbuds, put on a quiet This American Life podcast, and it helps me drift off.
Although it may not work for everyone, I find that masking noise I can't control with some I can does help. If nothing else, it's less frustrating.

Isn't there some issue with using CFs in enclosed recessed lighting, having to do with the heat decreasing bulb life? That could be a con if you're trying to be "green". Just a thought...

In college, my housemate and I used to live next door to not one, but TWO scream-death-metal bands. The houses weren't connected but they may as well have been; our landlady owned both of them and both were old and leaky. They would open their windows at 8 p.m. and have "band practice" till 1 a.m. or later EVERY NIGHT. Random people would arrive at their house at all hours, and sometimes at ours. Some of them would leave right away with small bags. We learned not to leave stuff on our front deck because it disappeared and ended up on theirs.
We spoke to other people on our street--mostly older folks and families--and they all said they couldn't stand it and were afraid of the people that lived in the house. The neighbors were not receptive to our requests to turn the amps down, unsurprisingly. We started calling the police.
The first time the cops came, a man we didn't know knocked on our door and asked if we had called the cops on them. It didn't stop us from calling them the next time, plus the landlady, who was slow as molasses at doing anything. It was only when we made it clear that we were not renewing our lease, a full year later, that she evicted them, plus reduced our rent. Given her inaction, we decided not to give her a second chance. It was disillusioning.

These are cute...and they'll withstand the summer drought, a bonus :)

I like the idea! My doggy would love this, too--she's not allowed on the furniture, so she's one of those nighttime "stealth sofa sleepers." A comfy chair with a washable cover could work for both of us...

I'd be curious about cell phones, too. My screen gets icky from face makeup and whatnot...what's the best thing to use on there? I'm a bit leery of things like alcohol on that surface.

That's cute! It's been a while since I've seen a paint-by-number.

Maybe I got a bad batch, but when I bought the lavender lemongrass aroma pill, the resulting smell was like a gross doctor's office. Nothing like the yummy scent of their lavender lemongrass candle...I was rather disappointed.

If it were my bathroom I'd be tempted to do one of two things: either do the brown/light blue/muted pink look, like rperls said, or fully embrace the weirdness of the bathroom and go thrift-store ironic. Owls! Avocado green! Paint by number! Obviously not a look for everyone but it would be an easy (or maybe just funny) way to make the dated aspects look intentional...

WOW, Deb, that was exactly the sort of information I was hoping for. Thank you so much! That is indeed our door, and I love the idea of the matching wrought iron. Thanks to both of you for the advice.
