Agree with the others who said get rid of the curtains. Then, how about puttting benches with cubbies under both windows (for toy storage and a "window seat" for your child. The empty wall could use a low book case with pictures above (maybe use the cute dog potrait as a center piece) I'm picturing all these in a crisp white to play off your trim and new wall color. My husbands grandmother who was a make do kind of person stabilized her chairs by drilling through the legs and inserting one of those long metal dowels with threads on it from front right leg to back left leg and reverse (makes a cross under the chair) and then you put a washer and nut on.
