I guess I am opposite here...I usually love original wood, especially MCM pieces...but I really like the end product here. It's unique and remains classy. Just a little more glamour than the original piece had as plain wood.

we are getting ready to put hardwoods in our house and have a medium sized dog. So, researching for appropriate flooring for the dog that would not have to be refinished quickly or replaced was #1.
You want to look at Janka ratings - I believe 2500 was the MINIMUM recommendation. Also, look for a wood that has lots of grain so if it does get a scratch, it is not as noticeable. Already distressed flooring was recommended as another way of dealing with dog claws, but I just couldn't go for that one.
Dog claws are rough on flooring.

I absolutely love a practical gift...it also allows me the opportunity to use the money that I would have needed to spend on the practical gift on a little luxury at some other point in time. I love that there are every day things in my life that remind me of those that I love and love me.
And as you pointed out, the practical gift is sometimes a step-up from what you would have purchased for yourself.

I am in the, "please don't bring me anything, I invited you because I want to see you" group. I do not like wine. I agree that household items are personal, unless you know the person very well and know something small they have been wanting, they will just feel obligated to use or display something they do not want in order to not offend your feelings. I feel badly if I let food go to waste, but I don't enjoy snacking. I know, I am weird and so many people appreciate a nice gift...but I don't understand why it seems that people are trying to make hostess gifts a requirement.
