That looks like it needs to become a desk area. Of course it wouldn't be very functional because its so narrow and the lowest shelf (maybe this one can even be removed?) wouldn't allow a chair to be pushed in. But what I would do is put a cute stool in front of it and style it as a desk (few magazines or books, maybe make it a landing strip where you put your mail) to distinguish that little space from the rest of the room.
