Yes... I have never been afraid of that. perhaps because I've never been burnt by it but nonetheless I ceiling mounted window treatments, painted 3/4's of the walls, and even wall mounted a television. It's my space and I'll return it back to it's original state. But chances are when I show it, the next renter will prefer the upgraded finished apartment to a white box anyway. Until the damage I do exceeds my one-month's-rent security deposit I think it's a small price to pay to feel HOME instead of DORM when I walk in. My family is all far away so I put the importance of "place" very high on my list. Be brave!

Or have a piece of glass cut to size and paint the backside for an inexpensive back painted glass counter

I've never been afraid of breaking a few rules and making an apartment my own... nothing is worse than a bare white dorm-like apartment with posters puddy'd up to the walls to avoid a few holes and patchwork. After painting and hanging things all over the apartment I invested about 250$ into building a potrack from reclaimed wood and plumbing pipe. I spent two weekends constructing it and now that it's done I can't muster the nerve to touch the ceiling. Nothing in my lease states anything about touching the ceiling but I can't overcome my self-inflicted paranoia!

Benjamin Moore Ozark Shadows is my absolute favorite paint color... it's the perfect not too dark not too light... and its very deep and transformative... blue/green warm/cool depending on the light. http://www.benjaminmoore.com/en-us/paint-color/ozarkshadows

I think you should find something dramatic as inspiratin like this Limited Edition Tron Chair: http://designwire.interiordesign.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/comp1.jpg and then subdue it a little bit. Make your pops of color your smallest investments in case you tire of them... Bright orange pillows from CB2 or West Elm should set you back 20-30$

As for an area rug try this one... http://www.westelm.com/products/ombre-dye-rug-midnight-t357/?pkey=e%7Cdye%7C12%7Cbest%7C0%7C1%7C24%7C%7C8&cm_src=PRODUCTSEARCH||NoFacet-_-NoFacet-_-NoMerchRules-_-

Be careful with Orange and Black... If anything add a fur throw in a neutral color over the sofa, then place the pillows there.

Adding Color To My Boring Living Room? Good Questions

Listen to DovieAnn and make the couch and windows the focal point. If you want to take the next step, wallmount the television on the wall adjacent to the bedroom with one window. Pick up a 54" square coffee table and an arm chair. Hang artwork opposite the newly wall-mounted television to balance, that way the focal point will be the beautiful sofa and windows, flanked equally with art and media
