You've gotten a lot of great comments, but you do need to think about your relationship with your landlord. If you paint the walls orange and mess around with the appliances, you could be courting trouble.

I'd paint the kitchen walls/backsplash a nice light periwinkle or steel blue, change out the hardware on the cabinets (as everyone has suggested). I personally like to leave my kitchen windows uncovered, but a bamboo blind would be nice.

If you want to do something about the look of the fridge, I'd personalize with some nicely arranged photos.

I just painted two sliding closet doors in my son's room with the magnetic primer chalkboard paint from Benjamin Moore. We used a roller.

Just wanted to warn folks that is VERY lumpy and frankly doesn't look that nice. We were going for a smooth blackboard surface look -- this does not get us there.

Plus, it's hardly magnetic at all. You'd need those rare earth magnets to actually hold up papers, and those magnets are far from toddler safe.

It's been sort of a waste of money (that paint is not cheap) and effort and we're wondering what to do next.

Color me unimpressed.

Ditto what NYSFGirl said. I had the same Pottery Barn curtains and they WILL shrink even if you wash them on the cold gentle cycle. For me that was OK, they were slightly too long before. But they didn't hang quite right after.

Get them dry cleaned, even though it costs an arm and a leg.

This room is great, I think better photography would have put you higher up the running.

Oh man. Insta-finalist, for sure. I love how stylish yet liveable this place is. Love the red and the blue in the kitchen and the bright yellow in the living room. I don't necessarily agree with the person who told you to get "furniture upgrades" -- I love that this looks like a real home, not something created for a magaine.

I love it that you clearly have created a haven for yourself on a real-life (i.e. limited) budget. I agree with the others that better photos would have ended up with a better result in the contest.

Depends on the kitchen, of course!

I'm crazy for white marble, but I couldn't afford it and I couldn't manage the upkeep even if I could.

BTW, Corian or CaesarStone are not really the same kind of product.

Corian is seamless, I guess it is 100% plastic/resins. I love how it can be a solid block of color. But apparently it scratches easily.

CaesarStone/Silestone/Avanza are mostly quartz with just a bit of resins. I have Silestone in my house and I love the way it looks and how invincible it is. No upkeep at all, ever. Very modern looking, too.

Love it. Tell us about the bathroom tile -- I love the tiles on the wall.
