I was in the middle of refinishing the cabinets in my (1980s rental Austin, TX) kitchen when I decided that the intentionally-rough trowelled plaster of the kitchen wall - whose nooks and crannies had captured decades worth of grease - just had to go. At first I only intended to sand them down a little to make the wall a little smoother, but one particularly forceful scrape brought up a whole section. Turns out there was some sort of layer between the plaster and the drywall, so i thought I could pull the whole thing off and leave pristine, smooth drywall beneath. Before I had a chance to think twice, I'd already taken the demo past the point of no return. Turns out that for every square inch that came up without a hitch, another inch somewhere else brought the cardboard backing with it all the way to the gypsum core. So I ended up having to re-plaster half of my de-plastered wall. It took about three days longer than I expected and made a gigantic mess, but at least that awful texture is finally gone! Ok, very nice, very modern. Whatever. Now, show me how to get the look of Skyfall *Manor* and we're in business. James may have always hated it, but I can't get enough! Get This Look: Skyfall |

I just finished building a cage for our two new bunnies Fritz and Daisy. Once I get around to sewing some cushions for it, it's doubling as a window seat in our tiny, chair-sparse apartment. They, and their big brother Percy, have full run of the apartment, but they're getting better about using their cage for their necessaries. Would You Build Furniture for a Pet? |

I agree with the sentiment, but just to play devil's advocate, I wonder whether there's ever any room for aspirations? I mean, it makes sense to be honest with yourself, but isn't there something to be said for wanting to entertain more, or live with less clutter? I feel like an easy, cynical interpretation of this thread is, "are you a lazy slob? Well, you'll never change, so why not just embrace the chaos?" Seems too depressing for words. If you don't think your landlord will notice or care, why not remove it altogether? Surely tat would be better than a border two layers deep? Is There Such a Thing as a Good-Looking Wallpaper Border? Good Questions |

Our gender roles are 180 degrees off the norm. I'm obsessed with interior design, but my fiancee claims not to care about it at all. So she says I'm totally free to make all the decisions about decor. As long, of course, as I stay within budget. And avoid any dark colors because she thinks they're all oppressive. Or buy anything that isn't strictly utilitarian (no knickknacks, ever). And avoid window treatments. And throw pillows. And any typographic art. Or really any art that isn't an impressionist print. And I can't mix patterns. Ever. Because it apparently always clashes and isn't ever a good idea. Or do anything trendy or offbeat or silly because I saw it on a blog. Or spend just a little more for something really good quality when there's a cheaper version that's almost as nice if you squint at it... Who Makes Decorating Decisions in Your Home? |
