I think it's a great piece! Paint it and do something (or nothing) to the cane depending on your style. Definitely keep those handles.

Just bought a house that sounds much like yours. 1911 Craftsman, last renovated in the late '70's/early '80's, owned by Grandma. We're in the process of getting rid of the wall to wall carpet. In the living room/entry hall/area, we found oak floors under the carpet. They were in really rough shape and we had them refinished ($1400). In the bedrooms, we're finding layers of asbestos tile, vinyl, and "Congoleum", with fir (eventually) underneath. From what I hear this is typical, and likely what you'll find also. It's doubtful anyone would go to the trouble to remove the original wood floors.

White. Absolutely. Currently the dark red walls appear to recede, while the white (or pink?) ceiling appears to come forward. Plus it emphasizes all the angles, and not in a good way. It's jarring.

So annoying! I was in the same situation once. I asked the woman who lived upstairs if she could please not wear heels around the house in the mornings because I was working graveyard and just getting to sleep then. She looked at me like I was insane to even ask such a thing. I don't know, was that out of line?
