My 1 year old mini schnauzer chooses to sleep in his own bed beside mine since he was 12 wk old. Given the fact that your entrance door is just adjacent to this "unused" space, you definitely need to go custom. Sliding doors might be easier on the eyes as the kitchen cabinet is in the background. as for colour, you probably want to paint the section below the tiles white and go with with custom panels (which is also the cheapest).
