I'd say you either turn the air conditioning UP or turn the thermostat down.

My reasoning is basically that when you talk about the "air conditioning" you're actually talking about the intensity of the machine's activity (not sure how else to phrase that). So by turning the A/C "up," you're increasing the rate at which it cools the air.

By turning the thermostat "down" you're talking more immediately about the air temperature. So colder = down.

I absolutely name gadgets. My hard drives, my computer, my phone, etc. Everything's named after mythological entities (mostly greco-roman, but I don't always restrict myself to a single pantheon).

My iPod is Apollo (among other things, the god of music), my hard drives are Pegasus and Tulpar (both flying horses), my wireless router is Aether, a couple flash drives named Nyx and Khaos...

I have a set of flash drives that I diverged a bit with - Sol, Terra, and Luna. They're all identical designs, but Luna's the smallest of the three.

Notice that none of these articles/sources have a picture of the original building without this fancy-schmancy "skin" on it? None. What? Big hoopla about making the "ugliest building" look better, but not a single "before" picture for comparison.

So, treehuggers would love a product that required a tree to be killed?

How is that different than nudging the handle with your wrist? With the exact same part of your wrist that they show in the picture above?

Unless you have twist-on faucet handles, I don't see any difference at all.

Except that this would lighten by wallet by $500 .

My computer desk isn't *immediately* adjacent to my bed but it's on the wall to the side of my bed (about three feet of chair space between them).

It's really convenient positioning, as it's my primary audio player, it's right there in the morning when I'm checking my e-mail/rss feeds while getting ready for work, etc.

And I can always throw in a movie and watch from bed rather than risk falling asleep on the living room couch (the couch is comfortable, but not for an 8-hour sleep shift).

Just bought my second a couple weeks ago - a 2001 monolith-style MyBook. It'll hold a little shy of 1TB, so alongside my 250gb external enclosure-housed drive and my laptop's internal 80gb drive, I don't think I'll be needing any more drives for a while.

"And people purchased their old TVs with the reasonably expectation that they would be able to use them unchanged until the TV's end of life..."

That is never a reasonable expectation when buying any kind of technology. I buy new tech fully expecting it'll be obsolete within the year.

It would need some serious wheels - little bitty ones won't do a whole lot of good unless you're cruising up and down the halls of your retirement home. If it's about the distances to corner stores, etc, then you need to figure in cracked up sidewalks, uneven pavement, whatever.

And "special shoes" are probably not going to fly with most people. If the idea is to strap into wearable transportation on-the-go, it has to work with whatever you're wearing (within reason - hopefully no one would try using something like this with high heels on).

But I like the idea. Though it is a little reminiscent of those kids shoes with the pop-down wheel.

I have zero sympathy for anyone complaining about loss of their tv signal. They were told it was coming for a year, they had the opportunity to get converter boxes for pretty much free, and that's that. If they still haven't done anything to get ready, tough freakin' luck.

This isn't the first Samsung device to do this. I bought the BD-P1600 about two months ago and it does the same things, though it doesn't have quite the form factor that this one does.

Added bonus: people who aren't comfortable touch-typing (read: people who shouldn't be using your computer anyway) won't be able to do as much on your computer and will probably give up and go away. WIN.

I'm actually more impressed with the lights - umbrellas as light diffusers? Interesting... though would probably only work with such high ceilings. My apartment will have to wait.

We actually have several people in my office using these. They swear they're the greatest thing since sliced bread.

I tried it for a few days and ended up with a fairly sore back. Haven't tried again since - if I could get one with a base & casters so I could slide towards and away from my desk without falling backwards, I might be more inclined to try again.
