While neighborhood labels do change over the years, Stuy Town is most definitely not, nor ever really was, the Lower East Side. Historically, the uptown/downtown demarcation was made at 14th Street, not 23rd [read Gotham by Burrows and Wallace; Five Points by Anbinder; Low Life by Sante; etc.]. Stuy Town extends from 14th Street to 23rd Street and was built in 1947 in a neighborhood previously known as the Gas House District for the power plant and gas tanks that loomed over the mostly Irish and German immigrant families in the neighborhood. It was a tenement slum much like the Italian and Jewish Lower East Side. After the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in 1911, the bodies of the dead were taken to a makeshift morgue on the Gas House District's waterfront.

As for neighborhood lines today, check out the New York City Department of City Planning website. Stuy Town is not even in the same community district as the LES.

Fantastic use of space! I also live in Jackson Heights and have essentially the same kitchen layout. I find I never actually eat in the eat-in part of my kitchen. Creating another use for it would be great and this is giving me plenty of ideas!

Awesome, awesome place! And I LOVE that the history of the tenement is so alive in the space.

If anyone is interested, I found it listed in the NY Times for $325k.

I also bought a Water Management shower head (the Fire Hydrant hand-held) based on a previous AT post. And I completely agree with @ser—one of the best home-improvement purchases ever. The Water Management customer service was absolutely fantastic and the shower head is truly miraculous. It revolutionized my shower experience! I couldn't stop raving about it for weeks!

I'm a really messy showerer (suds fly everywhere) so the whole "shower room" concept wouldn't really work for me but it looks great!

It's neat when you know what's going on (and the last piece is definitely amazing) but otherwise it really, REALLY creeps me out. Reminds me of bedbugs, fleas/ticks, swarms of insects, mold.... Nothing pleasant.

The Astoria chair has been around for at least a year but you're right, it's a nice chair and perfect for a bedroom corner, which is where I have mine. It's super comfortable for a smallish chair and the back has just the right pitch for lounging. My dog likes it too—he's taken to sleeping there all day while I'm at work.

Sorry to be nit-pick but product and brand names are the easiest things to spell-, fact-, and format-check, especially products that are so prolific. IPhone? IPod Touch? Really?!

I had definitely seen this space before and would have gone insane wracking my brain wondering where. Thanks to the other AT commenters for reminding me it was on design*sponge!

The last four years of NYC apartments include:

First: $1,200 for a "fake" bedroom (used to be the living room, roommate put up a pressurized wall, hardly any common space), in technically a 1 bedroom apartment. "Luxury" doorman building, huge complex. My roommate was paying $1,200 too. UES 95th and 3rd. 33rd floor. Moved out after two and a half months (roommate was crazytown).

Then: approx. $1,600 for a 2, potentially 3 bedroom CRAPPY apartment, approx. 700 sq. ft., insanely nosey landlady. I paid around $800, shared with a roommate. Astoria, 32nd and Broadway. 3rd floor.

Then: $1,470 (rent stabilized), 2 bedroom (really 1 bedroom with fake wall put up but with plenty of common space), approx. 700 sq. ft. Street level. Awesome apartment. I paid $735 split with a roommate. Management company renovated the true 1 bedroom next door and started charging $1,600 for it. Best apartment ever -- the place was a steal.

Now: Bought in Jackson Heights. Love it. 1 bedroom, approx. 900 sq. ft. Mortgage maintenance is around $1,600/month (had large down payment). Love it and love living alone.

Good luck, Alexis! I am mildly obsessed with the NYC real estate market (I currently own in Jackson Heights, Queens) so I'm sure you'll eventually score a great deal. Have fun!

The flowers are actually frangipani (not pangi) but I grew up in Hawaii calling them plumeria.

I think their "cute" in that they could really work in certain situations but be so very very wrong in others.
