Leave the hinges alone. That's the voice of experience. You may be able to change the pulls, BUT check the spacing on the screw holes first. There were a few kinds of hardware made during that era that are not readily available in non-custom hardware today. Since this is a rental, you probably don't want to put out that much money. Go for a light neutral of some sort in paint for the walls and add pops of color with accessories that could go with you when you move. I would center that table under the window and add some stools. I've actually seen some breakfast sets like that.

Books were my greatest downfall. Until recently, bookstores were some distance away, so I tended to buy wildly when I got to town. Now I can check for available ebooks or audio books electronically with a subscription to the Free Library of Philadelphia and/or my local library consortium. I can put items on hold electronically at both places, including physical books at the local location. That means I can tell almost instantly if anything is available before purchasing. I also make use of free and inexpensive offers for ebooks.

Before you go the "get-it-yourself" route, there is a big difference in types of wool. I suspect that the finer types that are used for making clothing would not hold up as well in a rug. Use due diligence.

I gave up on the whole house humidifier for our dry West Texas winters--hard to clean and didn't really do the job. For the last two winters, I've used a Crane drop humidifier in the en suite at night, or if the heater is running A LOT, in the daytime as well. It seems to do the job for my sinuses and skin. We have a lot of minerals in our water, but the cleanup is easy in a bathroom and I clean weekly with white vinegar as well. I like not having to worry about the mold problem. I'm just getting ready to begin using it again for the third winter. Great, easy to maintain product.
