I agree that you have to find your coffee ritual, and stick to it. No coffee ever tastes as good when people don't make it your way! Here's my own tried and tested - http://homefluffyhome.blog.com/2012/11/07/a-latte-look-forward-to/

this is the best idea EVER. for white wine lovers like myself-

chardonnay pinot noir - clean, fruity, light, sparkling, delicious

prosecco - as above, but extra special. Add a strawberry

pinot grigio - with pasta, fish, chicken - a strong, bright and zingy wine. delish.

Cinnamon is good, but you have to get every part of the coffee right to get something really special. Here's my own favourite coffee 'recipe' - http://homefluffyhome.blog.com/2012/11/07/a-latte-look-forward-to/

I love the wooden coasters, but buying something for the home is so personal that I wouldn't want to get it wrong. Wine is obviously a safe bet - everyone loves a crisp white pinot grigio, or a gorgeous sparkling chardonnay pinot noir, which in my opinion is nicer than champagne (and just so happens to be cheaper!) - prosecco, too.

Food gifts will always be appropriate - I recently received some gorgeous fig vinegar for my birthday, as well as some flavoured honeys (which I blogged about here, and they are lovely - http://homefluffyhome.blog.com/2012/10/29/hello-world )

I keep my fireplace pretty simple because the brick and tile work is so beautiful (And busy!) that I don't want to detract from it. But if anyone has any suggestions of what might work well here, I'd love to know! Here's a pic -- http://homefluffyhome.blog.com/2012/11/05/come-on-baby-light-my-fire/

I was thinking about this today. It's exacerbated by so many of the cheap, plasticky toys on offer, with the main aim of owning as many of them as you can. This afternoon I I did a round up of really gorgeous gifts for children which are good value, and more importantly, will give them huge amounts of play time, rather than being tossed to one side after ten minutes. Plus lots of them can be enjoyed together to give more family time http://homefluffyhome.blog.com/2012/11/05/rockett-round-up-adorable-gifts-for-children/

I second the olive oil suggestion, I would LOVE to receive a really great bottle of extra virgin. I was recently given a set of infused honeys, which were adorable and delicious:

Or on the homemade theme, how about a whisky-bottle-turned-dish soap? It doesn't make any pretences so would be perfect for good friends. Scroll to second pic on this page- http://homefluffyhome.blog.com/2012/11/03/im-on-the-lamb/

And finally, how about a home made infused vodka? Shove some sweets into a bottle of vodka, and shake it up every day for a week. Pear drops, skittles and worther's originals toffees all work really well. What a fun gift! You could even repackage the vodka to match its flavour.

oh yummmm. It reminds me of chorizo bean stew, which is one of my favourite winter dinners.

There is nothing heartier or happier than a stew or casserole at this time of year. I literally just posted this recipe for lamb and cider stew, which is so easy and so satisfying on a cold day. It's also great for big numbers of people! http://homefluffyhome.blog.com/2012/11/03/im-on-the-lamb/

I'm fortunate enough to live in England, where we normally have rainy, but pretty mild weather. Although I *was* born during one of the country's biggest ever storms, in October '87, which ripped off roofs and tore down trees.

I think I would use the time to prepare for future disasters, because until you're in one, you don't really know what to expect. Maybe make a list as you go along of all the things you wish you had bought/prepared, go round taking pics of all your personal belongings in case you need to claim anything on insurance, go through emergency procedure with family so they know what to do, etc.

Also, lots of silly games to get everyone laughing and raise spirits - no power needed!
Try to sing one song to the tune of another.
Play word association or word disassociation.
Tell a story in relay by saying just word each and going back and forth to complete the ridiculous sentences - you never know how it'll go.
