Such a great way to start planning a room. This would also work great when transitioning the little one to his/her big kid room (the colours in this room are great as they are not too precious/little kiddie). I would love to see how you brilliant folk at Apartment Therapy would incorporate Dream Child's bedding into a room design.

P.S. Keep the green rug! How about a grey bookshelf?

Step by Step: How To Turn Inspiration Into Decoration

Wonderful use of vintage, local and handmade pieces. Pretty without going over the top. Smart idea to not be too "little girlie" in a nursery (or toddler room) that she will outgrow in 2 years - my thinking exactly!

Wow, love this room! Love that it was designed with the little person in mind - with so much thought and attention. Amazing use of colour. A great example of how to make a pretty little girl's room without going overboard with pink and frills. Perfection.

Great use of colour - just enough to make room pop with the orange, without going overboard. That cool and eco-friendly (vintage) dresser is amazing. I'm inspired!

In Search of the Perfect Family Coffee Table

My kids (2 & 5) love to use our coffee table as a place to bring out the markers/crayons, etc. - and why not, it's where all the action is! Last year I bought a fantastic round solid wood table from Urban Tree Salvage. It's the trunk of a maple salvaged from a tree cut down in Toronto - rather than going to mulch these trees are reclaimed and the local carpenters make all kinds of beautiful products.

The table is about 5 inches thick with solid metal unpolished (very industrial) legs. It has a very light varnish to protect the wood - but the wood is well aged, so there isn't much anyone can do to damage it.

This type of table is good for a house with kids for number of reasons:
- solid enough that kids can sit, climb, jump on it - no worries
- it's round - I figure that reduces chances of major injuries
- it's salvaged wood so you can't really bang it up
- marker (and glue) can be wiped off the light varnish - pens are a bit of a pain
- it's sustainably produced, a great story for the kids, live by example, etc
- it's pretty frickin' gorgeous, and one of a kind
- it's affordable - think I paid about $650 CND

I had my eye on a spectacular table from Gus Modern but oy it was $1400 and man who could handle the constant worry, life is too short, kids are too fun to have to banish them from the living room because the table is too precious ...

I love primary colours for kids but set against white walls and furniture - ie. pops of colour through the bedding and accessories.

I completely avoided the precious pale nurseries for my girls - bold and fun is the way to go. I have one daughter with a white room with pops of red and purple, and her little sister's room is a bit of a work in progress with pink and teal. The fun thing with these palettes is that they can evolve as the baby turns to a toddler to a kindergarten kid and beyond without having to change it up too much. Continuing to find special pieces in these colours is a part of the fun.

Great ideas! I collect all kinds of trinkets and "trash" to reuse for crafts with my 5 year old. I'll be adding these to my repertoire - especially love the egg carton one. Ditto on the goal of avoiding dollar store junk as much as possible (it becomes a whole new challenge when it comes to birthdays ... will be blogging on that shortly).

Funny I'm planning my daughter's 5th birthday with a "dance party" theme (decided to broaden it to all types of dance, though ballet will factor strongly into decor). I think I'll have to steal your tutu cake skirt idea - that's brilliant!

I love all the home-made pillows and crib skirt - the best way to make a baby's room special. And we share your love for chevrons over at Dream Child Organics!

The little closet nook is super cute ... but I think future plans may require some more storage rather than more play space. Babies accumulate a LOT of stuff (I have hand-me downs stored in stacked boxes for all future/outgrown sizes).

Great idea. Yes, I'm trying very hard to resist the princess party that my daughter (turning 5 in March) says she wants. Princess isn't super welcome in my house. Last year we did garden fairy (more woodland than disney) - it was super fun. Need a theme for this year ... looking for ideas ...

Very very cool. Amazing that these kids have a space to create, without too much toy clutter. My kids' play space is a bit less art a bit more 'stuff' these days - it just started to evolve that way and am wondering how to re-think it so it's a bit more deliberate. The art stuff is there but gets a bit overshadowed by all the trinkets/puzzles/lego etc..

Wondering what the yellow-framed glass/plastic window thing is?

P.S. for 2 year olds, I agree with others above, keep it super small and simple, just family or close friends. Nothing structured for this age. The "theme" parties work best for 3 years and up.

Tips for Throwing a Low-Stress
Toddler Birthday Party

When my daughter Jade turned 2, I made the mistake of inviting her little friends from the 'hood plus my friends with small kids, plus family to the point that we had 17+ kids (in ages from 0-11) and parents - in a small narrow Victorian semi. A few days before I started to panic and ended up hiring a local kids performer who came with guitar in hand and a great repertoire of danceable and sing-a-long tunes for kids. He saved the day! (The pin the tail on the donkey, on the other hand, was a bust).

Now I know better, here's what I do:
- keep the parties small (10 kids max)
- pick a theme - makes it fun and helps to focus decorations etc.
- have some fun crafts (decorate hat, make your own fairy wand, etc.)
- have games with prizes (free dance, etc.)
- pinada (awesome fun, outside is best - a kid nearly took out my TV one year)
- home-made cake (my daughter every year picks her flavour)
- eco-friendly loot bags (re-usable bags, stickers, recycled paper note-pads, crayons)
- make it a costume party (we did garden fairy last year), kids all came with wings, etc.

I was thinking this year to "out source" her 5th bday coming up as these home parties tend to be a bit crazy to plan. But oh no, she loves the "home" parties so much now that she's adamant that we have it at home with her friends. Sigh.

Now a need a theme ... any ideas?

Love the floors and staircase - wow. I would love to see more of the "green" features. I Also, would love to see the kids' room(s) - maybe there's more colour in those rooms?!

Great colours in this room - love the reds. And that black chevron sofa is amazing!

I think more parents should think about the nursery not just for 'baby' but a room that a toddler and growing kid can grow into. I mean otherwise you'd have to completely redecorate in 2 years. Honestly, who does that?

This is a good example of a room a kid can grow into and an easy transition to the big kid bed. ie. neutral walls neutral, pops of colour through art and bedding. New bedding for the big kid bed, and you're good to go.

Love it!

I love the butterfly mobile over the bed - so pretty, looks DIY (do tell). I'm a big fan of chevrons for kids, to help bring a modern graphic edge to a kids room, and to help make it look less little-kiddie. Lovely room, love the red quilt.
