Hi,
if this would be YOUR OWN place, I would suggest just to paint over with similar color as the walls...
but - since it is JUST RENTAL - my advice is: if the landlord would not allow to paint over - LIVE WITH IT as it is !
Fill this room with your stuff - use the color of the bricks as compliment - to overpower the impact.

Use your immagination to live in harmony with it - it is not forever, you could always to move out .... do not destroy, what is not yours.

If the roof is good quality - leave it !!!

Take this green color as a base for the a color scheme:
paint your shutters - with same green and use some supplement color: dark green, (or juicy yellow, orange, ... will depend how the other houses around are ...)

Garage doors are huge surface - yuu will need them to match this color scheme - light green, supplement color ....

... if you want really to splurge your money - think about driveway - to use color-matching tiles instead of "boring" black.

Also - if you will go for "greener" look - there are pieces of tiles on the market, which will allow the grass to grow thru.
And they are not so "industrial looking" like a plain concrete or asphalt.

DO NOT PAINT - leave it red !!! It is very unique...

What will help to "make-it-lighter" :
- 1. Upright column ligting directed toward ceiling
- 2. do not use "pure" white - it will do too much difference, but whitish color will look better.
- 3. it has a "feel-of-the-castle" - they used lots of GOLD and shimmering ... mirrors, pictures in golde frames, candlesticks,
- 4. pick ONE lighter complementing color you like - light blue, yellow, green ... use it on carpet, uphostelry, curtains, pillows ..... with pattern sometimes repeating same deep red as on the walls -
- 5. Make the RED color deliberate choice and work around it - it looks like it was painted by experienced person - if you will find some "mistakes" - cover it with something (picture, frame etc.) - do not repaint it.

.... That's what I would do ...
Best luck with your project -

Xandra here again
- (continue on the theme of "FRAMES" from May-11)

How about "silver" frames to match that perfect sized refrigerator ... (I wish to have something so marvelous in MY kitchen ...) - !!! do not even think to replace it !!!!

... and INSTANTLY you will have very sleek, modern, space-age ultra cool look - put pictures or photos inside your "frames" ... some red-orange color of kitchen tiles will "bind" it opticaly together with the floor.

Kitchen Cabinet Paint Color & Rehab Ideas? Good Questions | Apartment Therapy Los Angeles

Hi,
lovely kitchen and beatiful tiles there !!!

How about to get some narrow profiles (used for moulding or picture frames - about 1 1/2" wide) and FRAME the edges of doors of cabinets with them.

Use some thin material under it - and Velcro this NEW SURFACE to the face of cabinets - orange color of your tiles will make lovely compliment.

OR - you could even make this "New Surface" removable under the Frames and have a NEW theme every 6 months.

What do you think ??

This could be little harsh comment ... but:
I really do not know, WHAT you are complaining about !?!

You are not buying it, just leasing it - and NOT going to live there for next 50 or so years ....

It will be easy cleaning for you, just wipe it out,
no worries about dirty walls, etc...

Just spruce is up:
- dark brown & light beige towels (I would not recomend white ones, it is too contrasting color)
- beige toalet seat (color of marble)
- some chrome accessories
- that mirror is not so bad, (I have seen worse..)

**************************************

a. DO NOT TOUCH the SURFACE of the MARBLE (I 'm horrified at seeing an advice of "sanding" it !!!!) - marble is a soft stone and you could destroy it WHOLE THING .... and you could end up paying for whole new bathroom, when moving out ...

b. there is NOTHING is wrong with SHOWER DOOR,
leave it as it is - (again - are you going to re-install it - when moving out ??)

**************************************

Use your fantasy - to accomodate your taste
and SAVE YOUR MONEY for a place of your own.

It is not a exactly "vintage" looking fan,
but looking good & working well, price reasonable, too ($120-$140).

We had smaller size over 2 years and no problem with it.

LOVE the FIREPLACE !!!!

It gives a soul to whole area.

Think a little "out of box" .... and work your design AROUND it ....

Look at the answers - lots of people were impressed and liked it, too.

Try to live a while in it .... after the rooms will be filled with a furniture - it will look different to you, too.

Paint to Brighten a Room With Dark Woodwork? Good Questions | Apartment Therapy New York
3/22/10 10:35 AM

Some years ago - I've kept my Xmas Tree till Mid-May
... color of - grayish-green, all needles still attached.

My Secret ?

It was standing in one of these "feed-me" stands,
and was getting a diet of: liquid plant feed and aspirin.

Looked great, BUT - was so petrified - almost like converted to metal ...
... I had hard time to fit it to a hug bag, had to chop it with a bolt-cutter to smaller pieces and at middle of night I dragged it to the garbage bin....

Outside was beginning of a summer ... and I was still sorry for my beatifull Xmas tree ... next year I got one of these artificial ones .... and never was sorry again.

To TJC:

a. thanks for liking my idea of not putting your OWN money into a rental.

b. If you have an urge to put your hands into a "good" use during weekends to improve your surroundings (and landlord is going to finance it) - GO FOR IT !!!
(You never know, if this skill of remodeling could not be used later ... hey - in this type of shaky economy - any skill, which could generate income (even part-time) - can prove VERY useful.

c. As for covering empty spaces on the wall - I have the same feeling - walls are the CANVASES to be put in use (it goes probably with our "engineering soul") - if it is there - USE IT !!!

d. For tacking the stuff on the walls - last time - I used VERY succesfully STAPLE GUN - it leaves only tine holes, which could be just "painted-over".

e. What to DISPLAY on the walls ? - Your drawings, your girlfriend artwork, posters, pages from magazines you liked & did not want to throw away, postcards, photos....

...anything, you could think about .... just, please, DO NOT GLUE or WALLPAPER !!! ...wallpaper looks great - but it is a nightmare to get out !!! (- from my own experience - removing wallpaper was almost a cause to family break-out ...)

Sarah:
here is one "V-CH-S" (Very-CHeap-Solution):

1. Put a Long Vertical Profile Wood (in the color of your cabinets) - or narrow Shelf - ABOVE your Counter ...

2. Either you have a LAMINATOR (or go to some COPY SHOP - and let them to LAMINATE) - some colorfull Photos / Prints / Posters or Part of Posters / Fabric ....

3. Size 11"x8.5" for a Regular page - or 11"x17" for Double page ...

4. ... mount your Laminated pages on Top UNDER your she shelf - Vertically between individual pages with a little overlaps on the sides ...

5. ... HEIGHT of your NEW shelf / Profile could be 11" (Vertical) or 17" high above the Counter.

Advantage - if you do not like it - you can replace them with no problem .... doing this for years ...

To TJ:

advice from long-time renter:

DO NOT do anything, you CANNOT TAKE with you to your next place.

DO NOT spent time to fix (not your space) - spent your energy for making more money - and ...

DO NOT spent YOUR money for something, that's not yours ....

Rather - SAVE all this Time, Effort & Money for a DOWN-PAYMENT for YOUR OWN PLACE..

Ashley,

here are my thoughts:

a. Garage door make-up:
White Framed Picture - (above the garage door) - Width of the garage door & Height - to match the height of the Entrance door Frame

b. DO NOT PAINT this lovely woodwork of Railing,
but MATCH several Accessories around with Wood of the same shade (Picture Frames, Shelves etc..)

c. Large Wall behind Staircase - Scenery Panoramatic Wallpaper (something in orange-yellowish tones) like Autum Leaves or Forrest - FRAMED on all sides by WIDE Wood FRAME of same shade as your Railing.

d. Better and more interesting Central Lighting

e. in the Center of Staircase - hang from the Ceiling - SOMETHING Long, Shimmering, (colors: white, silver, yellowish as the wood) - perhaps also incorporating strings of Xmas lights (with white wiring, not green).

Hope for starters it would help...

Like the second post by: "HeSaid" from Dec.15 -
RED color on the walls will tie all together.

But - what I would suggest:
- WALLPAPER - in RED - abstract theme
... to match the color and pattern of the carpet.

Then RED cushions on the sofas
and some Lighter Red color - and similar pattern
over Windows - as the SECOND layer over your whitish curtains. (Leave them the originals on - layering looks good...)

Red is a great color for smaller spaces, it makes them warm and welcomed.

Do NOT do: BLUE - it is cold and hard to coordinate for LIVING rooms - (but: great for Bathrooms...)

As for new furniture - if the OLD one works, do NOT throw it out... if the color is not to your liking, put some fabric/slipcovers over it - this way, you could have "new" furniture" feeling at will, any time .... and you could match even any real new purchase....
