i've come around on island-only kitchens myself. i work for a general contractor and we just installed a GORGEOUS one in the last apartment i worked on. there was an entire customized millwork wall of cabinets and storage galore, including pull-outs and appliance garages sized for appliances that were always plugged in (blenders, etc) that were really easy to access. built-in coffeemaker, wine storage, shelves, pantry, oven, microwave, fridge etc. with doors that covered the entire wall to be super sleek when guests were over. in the island was a double sink, built in dishwasher, a range, and just tons of counter space.

as art mentions-- the work triangle was still maintained.

cork can turn black with water exposure. i would advise against doing light colored cork in areas that have high potential for wet traffic or spills...

try adriatic wood products. usually we have millworkers custom-make these... but that's not a realistic price point for most of us! at that height you need to be careful about bowing/warping- we have our millworkers create a honeycomb engineered substrate to prevent this. the hidden hinges the commenter above mentioned are soss; you shouldn't use them on high-traffic doors as the hinges will sag over time. make sure to use 4 hinges per door (this will also help with the warping).

i think it depends a lot on which foreman happens to be running your move. on a recommendation, i used oz... long story short, they used 3 men (foreman who packed, runner who went down my four flights, and truck guy who loaded) and the runner and truck guy got in a shouting argument in front of me... why? because the truck guy said the runner wasn't doing enough work and was being lazy! then they left before i did to head to the new apartment, and i ended up beating them there (20 min traveling distance). by over an hour. then, the foreman insisted on getting at least $50 tip per person (which i wouldn't have had a problem with if i had felt they did a good job) and never refunded me for over $60 in boxes i purchased and never used! they also took about an hour to disassemble my bed because they failed to bring the proper tools with them. when i complained to their office, they sent me... a coupon for 10% off my next move!

my friend recommended moishe's and had only amazing things to say. i didn't go with them because they were more expensive per hour... but on the other hand, they probably wouldn't have been as slow as oz was!
