I have them, and I love them. They make perfect dining chairs.

Mama of a 22 month old, weighing in here. The point of your first baby's room? Is to do it up however YOU want. The baby isn't big enough to Buzz Lightyear it up, yet -- so why not make it a room you can enjoy? Not to mention a room you can explore your on parental theories in? I kinda pity the people who missed the opportunity to create a Montessori/80s hip-hop/scandi-mod/Nate Berkus extravaganza of their own. Why anticipate the day when the kid is gonna make it a craptastic Disney-hole? As long as you have clever storage and a sense of humor? You'll be fine. So never mind the naysayers! Enjoy your Montessori room!

Oh, and you should know that my comment is coming from a girl who frequently has a BLACK accent wall. Makes art pop and sexes things up. :) So I'm partial to BOLD color choices, even if you have to compensate in other places (pillows, throw, etc)

I don't know the technical parts. I'm going by feel, and this room feels nice. Especially the POP of lavender in the lamps.

I'm seconding the folks who say try lighter pillows for a lighter feel. A big light colored throw could make it feel different, too.

I've had the fancy inspectors. But I'm on house number three, and I will NEVER buy without calling in the system pros. Find a good heating and cooling company, a plumber, a roofer and an electrician. Have them assess the place and give estimates for fixes. The inspector told me that the furnace worked, but he never noticed that the VENTS weren't attached correctly. He didn't tell me the main sewage line would need replacing in two years. Inspectors + pros = better picture of the house and definite ammo for price negotiation.

I really try not to get heated about these name discussions. But ENOUGH with the warnings about what happens when people don't name their baby 'James' or 'Jane' or something plain enough for everyone to digest.

I know a Rocky and a Zouzou and a Rocket Lee and a Vega. I think they'll be okay. Know why? Because their parents are smart people who engage them and teach them to be open to the world.

You can't tell me that there ain't a whole world of Lisas and Mikes (properly spelled) who are total losers.

So says a 'Shanteka.' Who, despite the crazy name that her grandmother gave her (which came along with a beautiful poem, mind you), has somehow managed to be a SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT. I was unaware that my name made this success worthy of a Lifetime movie.

Unless somebody names their little girl Hairy Nuts? Find something else to be sanctimonious about, please?

I liked it. Totally agree with Patrick (t.o.o.). Totally thought it was nice way to ground all the glitz. They usually go with ALL glitter and they end up looking way to cheesy and pimped out.

I went to college. NEVER thought of this.

Super easy for those of us who are really tired of trying to hunt down interesting/affordable curtains. Cool idea.

Yes, for some people more is more. And when they put it together so well, sometimes people who lean toward the sparse can learn something.

This is a robust interior with a point of view. Lived in, lovely and when you dissect it? Totally doable.

Love your place, guys.

Surprise me.

Delight me.

Teach me something. Ah! That's the secret of mixing patterns!

Inspire me.

I want to respect the owner's EYE. That they saw something that the average person might have missed. That they have their own point of view.

Make me feel something. Even if that something is a little "too" for me. Too sterile. Too bright. Too happy. Too crazy. Too gloomy. Too mixed-up.

That's what I want in a tour.

This tour is ALL that and more. Absolutely fearless use of color and pattern. It makes you feel something as soon as you walk in. It's a "show home" that totally feels liveable and that's hard to do.

There's nothing wrong with a busy guest room. You're a guest? In someone ELSE'S home? You're livin' in their world , baby. And it's just color and pattern, people! It's not like they've installed a mechanical rooster or the Eye of Sauron above the bed!

And the intensity of the arrangement nixing the individual beauty of the pieces? That is clearly a design choice that they have embraced. You gotta sit down and soak it all in. I'm sure then, things jump out at you. Some folks like to showcase pieces -- most do, I think. I think that's a sort of catalog strategy. Freaking hats off the folks who do it different.

One of my favorite tours, evah! Good pick, editors!

Ooh! Three more things!

I like your coffee table! But it kinda clashes with the side table. Can you paint your side tables to match the table a little more? Or get some side tables that have the same shape?

http://www.younghouselove.com/2009/02/how-to-paint-furniture/

And a nice high window treatment could put a bow on things! WAIT! I hate window treatments too! But these, I can get with. I'd replace the natural shades with cloth romans for a cleaner look, though.

Green can be awesome in the right surroundings. The Viceroy Santa Monica is an example...

How Do I Make My Big Green Couch Work? Good Questions | Apartment Therapy Los Angeles
2/5/10 10:56 PM

Okay, look at your sofa as a big funky piece that makes all the super sleek modern stuff look interesting and eclectic. Stop thinking of it as HIDEOUS and HORRIBLE, if you can.

Now, I think the clock has to go. Clock couch = old-timey.
And I think the greeny-yellow paint and the couch = green old-timey.

What about wallpaper with a big ol' funky, attention getting print?
http://www.namarococo.com/collection.html

http://walnutwallpaper.com/wallpapers.php?filter=color&type=beige&name=Beige&paperID=594

http://walnutwallpaper.com/wallpapers.php?filter=color&type=green&name=Green&paperID=786

If you can't do the whole wall (I don't blame you, wallpaper scares me a little, too) why not frame a sheet or three behind the couch? Go super sleek and modern with the frame.

Paint the wall a non-greenish color, I think. No yellow either. Too Sprite. No red either. Too Christmas.

The two red pillows do equal Christmas. Match the wallpaper/art behind the couch with the pillows.

Can you get a similar side table and put two sleek (white?) lamps there. Cheap at IKEA or thrift. The problem with the paper lamp you have, while adorable on it's own, is that it picks up the totally '80s nature of the couch. I think that's what you are trying to fight.

SPLURGE!

No rustic frame. Clean white, thick frames. Bolder flowers in a BOLD clean designed vase.

A modern pouf could soften the room and add a little modern.

http://www.westelm.com/products/f891/?pkey=x%7C4%7C1%7C%7C6%7Cpouf%7C%7C0&cm_src=SCH

I think you have to surround it with modern and clean. When you go retro or rustic, the couch looks too RIGHT AT HOME with that style. As in, it doesn't look retro - it looks authentically like the 80s. I had to learn this the hard way at my house, :).

If it makes you feel better, I like the couch and I think you can totally make it a part of the kind of room you want.

Hope that helps.

THAT was awesome. Best use of shadow in home decor - the 'lamp' AND the kitchen containers.

And the wrinkles add charm and make the bed look so inviting.

I can totally relate to Minimalist Hoarding.

ME:...blah,blah, because I'm a minimalist.
MY FRIEND: Uh, no you're not.
ME: YES, I am. Do you KNOW how many books I have about minimalism...oh. Point taken.

Now I've decided to be a Well-Edited Maximalist. But this house makes me wanna pare back a tiny bit more.

Great tour.

After the kitchen, you have to scroll down to see the rest of the house EVERY TIME YOU CLICK A THUMBNAIL. It is a testament to how AWESOME this house is, that I scrolled through most of the photos. WONDERFUL decor.

It's not cookie-cutter. I still see the owner's original style in there, it's just more chic and put together. It's smart too, lots of storage and space-expanding decisions.

Excellent tour.
