I use a fabric liner too and have had this very problem - water seeping through the weave. It is a bit frustrating but I have found no way around it but to replace the liner every 4-5 years or so. To keep it around that long, my advise would be to stop bleaching it - washing every six weeks should do the trick without bleach. Bleach could be weakening the threads and reducing the integrity of the weave.

I do agree with several of the comments that posting photos of a 'friend's' bathroom without their approval is rude - that AT has moved from simply rude to beyond the pale by added mean and inappropriate comments is very disappointing. My experience on this site is that the comments by AT have typically been far more supportive than this.
Regarding the design - it's a consistent thought carried out and I also think it's better than some designs shown on this site that get raves. Personally, I think 'getting it' requires a pretty significant sense of humor which many seem to be missing this morning - it's a joke people - laugh.

Cork tiles from the 20s would be waxed not finished with a polyurethane. I grew up in a house with similar tiles (slightly younger vintage) and they are lovely to live with. How lucky that you have them and they are in such good condition!

Care of cork is fairly easy - certainly no more work than with wood.
Keep the floor clean of dirt and debris with regular sweeping (or vacuuming) and a weekly damp mopping. Don't leave the floors wet - after mopping, dry the floors well (a good microfiber pad on a mop head would work perfectly)
At least twice a year you may want to buff the floors to restore the luster of the finish. Use a soft white pad and buff on a low rpm. Typically you won't need to add wax with each buffing - only as needed. If you add wax each time, you will have a build up that will be very unattractive.
Moisture and dry air are the biggest risks to cork (same as with wood).

Regarding faux painting - if you decide to go this route, the best way to figure out how to pull it off (and this is what the pros do) is buy several pieces of scrap drywall and paint and paint until you get the process right. I'd recommend your scraps be about 4x4 at least.

Cement Boards are definitely an option - a bit different in look than I think you are going for at they color is relatively even and there will be joints. If you go this way - work with the material and play up the joints and screws - see this image http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/chicago/architecture/cement-board-118591
Screwing them in will require anchors but that is typically considered normal wear and tear in a rental - just pull down the panels, wash the walls and mud up the holes before you move out.
Good luck and we can't wait to see the results!

Thank you besf - archways, entryways both work - doorways does not.
Lovely photos - I have to point out that this isn't unique to Naples or Italy - for example, see Paris or Copenhagen.

I am getting the sense that AT has figured out that if they post photos from their vacations they can write off some of the trip. And good for them - all firms shoudl try to figure out how to do that. On the other hand, while it's nice that they share their photos, it would be also nice if they made more of an effort to make those images special and relevant to the readers of this site. Is there a way to make large courtyard entrances relavent? Probably but this post doesn't make the attempt.

His work is undeniably sexy. But I can get beyond the fact that it is also at it's very core suburban. Where is the street and sidewalk? Where is the building next door? The buildings are lovely as objects in the landscape but they just don't seem like good neighbors. Don't we have enough of suburbia at this point?

While I like the idea of a mirror inside the bathroom, I have to wonder, if it's a mirror inside, what does it look like from outside? The back of a mirror isn't the best looking and if the window is visible from the street, your yard or from your neighbors, you should probably think about how you are affecting that view. Any thoughts on how to treat the outside?

@michelleinbrooklyn,
The placemats look like a Chilewich product to me (not too surprising considering). In fact, they look a lot like these: http://www.velocityartanddesign.com/spun-vynyl-placemats-c-648-p-1-pr-16775.html

The only person you should write a 'What I Want' letter to is Santa.... and you should grow out of that phase by the time you buy your own house.

When the receiver of the gifts (bride and groom or, in this case, new home owners) provides their registry list to people they expect/hope to give gifts they are being incredibly rude. Expectations for gifts are, quite simply, tacky and childish.
Let your friends and loved ones pick out a gift as they chose and be grateful for their thought and generosity. You should never expect gifts and always be gracious and thankful for gifts you receive (even if you don't like them).

wow - I had no idea of hanging pictures on bookcases to be so horrid.
I don't see it as a trend or edgy. Designers have been doing this long before Domino and will continue now that it is dead. The time frame between Domino's death and NOW is minimal so the idea that the 'trend' disappeared is rather funny to me.
For some people and for some rooms, the layers works - and for others it doesn't. Personally, I like it and find, when done well, it is a great layer to a room.

I agree with others that this isn't exactly new - the idea of a picture hiding a safe or a television or a fuse box has been done and that's all that is being shown here.
I'm more interested in the wallpaper. It almost looks like a paint by number prior to painting. Is anyone familiar with it?
