Martha Stewart says you can put knives into the baskets but put them sharp end down. I bought inexpensive Chicago Cutlery steak knives and have had no problem in the dishwasher. Larger knives and such go on the top shelf in the center. Aside from wooden spoons, I don't put usually put my cutting board in the DW, although I have in the past. I think if the wood is 2" thick it isn't a problem. Never has been.

I cook fish in the DW also. Season it and then put it in tin foil and make sure it's water tight, top shelf, push the heavy duty button, and cook. Let it run the full wash cycle and then take it out. Works great! Of course, we wouldn't use DW detergent in.
