This Etsy shoe storage bench is FAB. Looks very well-made. Of course, it's also a bit expensive: http://www.etsy.com/listing/71621121/japanese-tansu-style-shoe-storage-bench?ref=v1_other_1

Shoe organization is a big issue in our house. My husband has way more shoes than I do and he likes to have most of them by the front door. I'm thinking of getting one of these customized pine shoe racks on Etsy: http://www.etsy.com/listing/64073747/shoe-rack-and-table?ref=pr_shop

There are lots of fun pieces here --- but there is just way too much stuff! Take out 50 percent and we're getting somewhere. The busyness + lack of editing and cohesiveness = an overall amateurish look.

Don't drink the Kool-Aid! I don't have a regular cell phone -- only a WiFi-enabled cell via my iPod Touch using either Line2 or Skype. And you know what? I don't miss having a "real" cell phone. I don't miss having to shell out $100 or more a month to AT&T or Verizon or any other carrier, either.

This is a great idea and I appreciate all the helpful advice. I too have a black thumb but the tips are giving me hope ...

We wanted to use the Living Christmas Company, but they only rent and deliver trees in a small area of Los Angeles. My house is way outside their range. So no living xmas tree for us.

However, we bought a used fake Christmas tree from Craigslist, saving it from the landfill.

Mike: These are all excellent suggestions. I have sold and purchased many items on Craigslist -- furniture, digital piano, bicycle case, etc. -- but I have never used the Google Docs spreadsheet to sell items, so thanks for the tip.

One request: Can you do a similar post for selling clothing and other items on eBay? I bet a lot of readers would LOVE that.

I love the simplicity and serene feel of your place. LOVE the living room credenza and your various "starburst" mirrors. It's good to see a house tour where folks do NOT have the luxury of being able to take out tile, carpeting, etc. You have to be more imaginative when one has to deal with the constraints that most renters have.

If I can't find kale in the grocery stores now in summer, what other greens can I use? Thanks.

To wordwallah: One great resource for getting rid of unwanted things that still have some use: FREECYCLE. These groups are all over the country. Google 'freecycle' and your city and you will likely find a group nearby. I have given away glass and backing for picture frames, cardboard boxes, even a couple of chairs.

I love the clean lines of your place. Quite elegant.

But WHERE do you put all your stuff -- clothes, other books, ephemera?!

Lots of great advice in the comments section on buying a sewing machine - however, as an absolute beginner, I can't try out sewing machines in a shop because I don't know how to use one AT ALL. What I want to do is to buy a sewing machine and then take a few classes before I start trying to hem curtains, make pillowcovers, and complete other simple projects.

All that said, would it be wise for me to buy one of the sewing machines that Consumer Reports recommends? CR recommends the Kenmore 15358 as the best "basic sewing machine."

I've also given up eating, at least for the time being. Going to wait for my body to start consuming my fat before I eat again. And then will only eat crackers.

Forgot to add:

- Canceled online coaching (I'm a long-distance runner)
- Won't pay more than $25 for a haircut. I'm vain. But not THAT vain.
- Cut waaay back on housekeeping
- Take 5-minute showers instead of 10 minute ones. I do this not b/c of cost but b/c I hate wasting water - especially now that I live in a drought-ridden state.

Wow - lots of frugal folks posting here. My two cents:

- Canceled cell phone.
- Canceled cable.
- Take bus to/from work (7 miles one way)
- Also run/bike to work once a week
- I've cut down on Starbucks but haven't outright stopped it. It's one of my few vices so I don't stress about that too much.
- Cook at home instead of going out, of course
- No more clothes shopping. At least until 2009. As it is, I wear the same 10 outfits day in and out, so why do I need more clothes?
- Christmas gift budget is $100 max. That includes decorations and wrapping, y'all.
- Run in fewer races (registration costs $$$).
- I only drive a couple of times a month, so I'm already pretty frugal gas-wise. But now I won't drive more than 10 miles unless I really have to. For most errands, I can walk (e.g. grocery store, bank, etc.).
