My parents strongly advised against buying my 110-year-old cottage. My dad is a contractor and they predicted all sorts of plumbing, electrical and structural nightmares that so far (six years in, knock on wood) haven't happened. They insisted I need to chop the dangerous, messy maple trees down right away. The trees were the main reason I bought the place! As far as decorating, we are again miles apart. My parents love everything new, shiny, expensive, leather and earth-toned. They have tons of silk plants, talavera pottery collections on every surface, and shimmery synthetic fabrics. I like natural fibres, pale blue, grey, white. I like fresh flowers and surfaces free of clutter. My furniture is mostly vintage pieces that I fixed up. I also have a ridiculously wealthy uncle who has the most fantastic antique cast-offs, which I get after my parents turn them down! I suspect my parents find my home shabby and feel a little sorry for me. They help me every chance they get. Recently, they saw a fantastic 50s era dinette set at a roadside sale and they snatched it up for me. They laughed because they thought it was junk but they knew I would love it. I just love the bedspreads that the Brady girls had in their bedroom. I think they were a prettty shade of mauvey-pink, with gently scalloped edges, and they folded back and made a sort of pocket to put your pillow in. I wish I could find something like that now! It can get sorta same-old around here...to the point where if I see certain silhouettes and colour schemes at the outset of a tour, I don't even bother to click through. I probably like it, but I've seen it all too many times. I love the chance to see unique furniture and art in someone's home, however, and this looks terrific to me.
