The upright pieces are optional headboards that you can purchase along with the bed. They are moveable and can be put anywhere along the four sides of the bed which we think is awesome! We haven't had any issues with the platform surround.This is due to the fact that the platform is covered in leather which makes it more comfortable to get in and out,secondly the mattress and the bed are almost the same level which helps avoid the awkward situation of banging your shin against the platform.
