I find my table super practical! (I'm the last photo.) I keep coasters, chargers, sewing notions, tools, and office supplies in the drawers -- anything small, basically, works great because you don't have to look in a very large area. They're also perfectly sized for CDs or old Nintendo game cartridges.

mdalexander, I'm with you. (Though it's just $2.00 for me to wash and dry.) If you're really concerned about cleaning the washing machine, I guess you could wipe down the insides with a microfiber cloth and your choice of cleaner? (I agree with this idea in theory but suspect I am too lazy to ever put it into practice.)

I have started air drying a lot more of my clothes, but sadly am not yet at the place where I air dry enough of them to save on the cost of a dryer load.

Many universities auction stuff like this off -- Texas does, and I suspect most other schools (certainly state schools) would too.

I moved about six months ago to a place more tornado-prone, and so my ever worried mother has stocked me up for emergencies. Thanks, Mom!

Aww, I had photos of my ex at my apartment when I got together with my current boyfriend. But then, the current and ex boyfriends already knew each other.

I asked my boyfriend, and he said that he did really like my apartment, and liked seeing that I was creative.

I joked that clearly the shape your apartment is in doesn't matter, as I started dating him. ;)

I hung a stocking off my inflatable deer's antlers. And my "tree" is one of those outdoor lightup reindeer with ornaments hung on him:

Where I live, decorating your house with a lot of burnt orange is known as "being a Texas fan." :D

@benfowler -- I kind of did too! I thought they were feathers.

Also -- I'm not sure I'd say termites are "harmless," even if they don't hurt people.

@dunklekatze & @mirandabee -- Thank y'all! And yeah, my boss didn't understand why I wanted it: "But it's... a map. An OLD map. And it's huge." I was so nervous to ask for it (I had only been there a couple weeks) but I'm so glad I did.

My biggest piece of art is a map they were going to throw away at an old job I had (it was in the office of a guy who quit, and they were finally cleaning out his office months later). Why he had a map from the UT Geography department, I don't know -- I was working for Texas at the time, but in a whole other capacity. But it was free and it's huge and I love it.

That's it hanging in my old apartment.

@triedthistwice -- not that I disagree about the classism, but West Elm ain't exactly cheap, and the look is definitely marketed to the upwardly mobile. (And given IKEA's locations, it's not terribly accessible to those with less money either, at least in my part of the world.)

I agree with megnez & iheartmini -- your neighbors don't pay your mortgage, they don't get a say. And seriously, that house is amazing.

As for property values -- is there really proof that this lowers them? And what is your obligation to help your neighbors sell their houses? I'm in favor of like, rules about not having grass that's knee-high or not letting your pool turn into a pond, but those things are health risks.

I spray painted mine silver not long after I got (over a year ago) and then... never found the right thing to put in it. I moved about three months ago and it's sitting on the floor in my bedroom, waiting for me to decide what to do with it.

That fabric is GORGEOUS; any chance people know where it's from?

Also, I have never yet lived in an apartment with a window in the bathroom. That is one of those nice perks I have not been able to trade up to.

The Turret -- my apartment building is one of those fake-castle places, and one of the corners of my bedroom is the inside of a turret (only the guy above me and the two units across the way also have them).

I haven't used fabric markers -- how would they look if you lightly pencilled in your design first, then drew over the lines? My freehand skills are pretty awful.
