We have our daughter on a floor bed... but we actually have two mattresses set up next to each other, in an L-formation, next to the wall. So if she rolls off of one she just ends up on the other (because she usually stays pretty close to the top of the mattress, near her pillow.) It's worked out really well for us. And we have a reading nook set up at the end of one of the mattresses so if she wakes up during the night she might just grab a book and read for a bit before she falls asleep again.

She doesn't roll off very often though and it's usually deliberate when she does. Either way, we also have a rug on the floor and she's not falling that far, we're using the thin Ikea mattresses.
