i think it's made out of chipboard/ particle not MDF.. I could be wrong though, if it's made out of fiberboard then it should be extremely heavy with minimal racking. Quality of West Elm Pasons Low Bookshelf? Good Questions |

To keep the patina use a rust inhibitor i.e.:(naval jelly, penetrol) and a clear topcoat, I like poly. When you treat the patina on steel the "cancer" is still there so theoretically it will continue to eat at the metal, but it will be slowed way down, the chair will outlive you. IMHO trying to stain and/ or dye to match existing furniture is gonna be more of a hassle than it's worth. Surface prep (ie: sanding)and then experimenting w/ different stains or pigments to find a nice match and then applying a nice finish coat to protect your piece, forget about it...
