I would also be embarrassed if my house was directly next to a commercial space and lacked the parking to keep guests segregated from said commercial space. Ex, "Our biggest embarrassment is telling people that they can park in front of the gas station/grocery store/car dealership etc." I get how defining the hospital as a "mental" hospital can be offending, but I believe that the intent behind the comment was not meant to offend but rather be transparently honest about their home's more annoying quirks. I'm surprised that everyone descended so harshly on one little phrase.

That being said, I think this house tour is adorable=)

That first wreath is going to kill somebody! I like the lushness of the last one though.

I adore house tours featuring a clean, uncluttered & neutral Scandinavian decor style- but my own home is decorated with gypsy pops of bright color, random stacks of books & tchotchke groupings, and life. There's lots of life in my home. Sometimes I wish I had multiple homes, so that I could have fun decorating each one in a different style. Then I laugh, and just buy things that I enjoy:)

I have two puppies that sleep together in a crate in another room. Even through the closed door they hear my alarm go off and start a rousing chorus that is impossible to sleep through! I start my coffee before I take them to the yard and by the time we're all back inside I'm awake, the house smells delicious, and I've been thoroughly showered with puppy-love. It's a great way to start the day:)

This is cute. The color combo feels a little "tweeny" to me though. I tend to prefer a richer, more rustic, comfy textured feeling. Plus I have dogs, so clear glass accents don't go over well in my home!

My husband literally does not care. He wants his chair to be comfy, his sheets to be clean, and his dinner on time. I usually get everything right but the dinner:P Asking him to do anything is too hard anyway, because he thinks on it, draws diagrams, thinks some more, runs to Ace Hardware three times during the project -often stretching it out for days- and then leaves a huge mess for me to clean up. Uggh.

I can tell that he picks up on the homey "vibe" in our house. He comments when we visit places that aren't as clean/clutter-free as ours about how hard it would be to live with so many distractions, so I know he appreciates my efforts.

Who Makes Decorating Decisions in Your Home?

I took the "Color Acuity Test" and scored a 7... Apparently I have difficulty determining between blues and greens. Then I took the "Color Vision Deficiency Test" and got 2 questions wrong in the Tritanopia category- I googled tritanopia and it is "A rare form of color-blindness resulting from insensitivity to blue light, causing confusion of greens and blues." WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!

The funny thing is that this explains why I got a headache trying to color match Benjamin Moore paint samples to a magazine picture, for an upcoming bathroom redo, in, of all colors, dark teal blue.

I love this style because it essentially allows me to be lazy and still design-forward. Too cheap to buy a vase? Throw the flowers in a canning jar. Finish on the dresser is chipped and peeling? Ah, well, it's rustic chic! Don't have hours to spend DIY-ing pallet furniture or combing flea markets for vintage stuff? Go to IKEA!

Ugh. The last one I SO GET. We inherited the world's wonkiest cabinets with our new house! Thankfully the previous owners had painted them white (which I love) so I can live with it until we scrape together enough for a full-gut reno... But every time I open and close those drawers wood scrapes against wood, cabinet doors hang ever so slightly askew and won't close all the way, and it sucks. It honestly sucks. Buy quality cabinets, people! Don't just paint what you've got and think that you've solved all your problems!

Tim- I just found this "before and after" and I have to say, I am blown away! I have lurked on Kara's site before to get interior design ideas, and this is exactly the level of professionalism that I have learned to expect with her (and your) work! If readers would take the time to CLICK THROUGH to your tutorial, they would see the rich polished wood (paint it? seriously?) that is all over the kitchenette- ceiling included- and how everything ties together into a lust-worthy, eclectic space. And I LOVE the vintage glass bobber pendant lights- but you didn't say where you found them? A fixture like that would work perfectly in my coastal powder room.

We lucked out by moving into a house whose master suite was already painted the most luscious deep brown... sort of a "chalky" brown, with cool undertones. Very soothing, and goes perfectly with our white wrought iron bed frame and a milk-glass vase of hydrangeas. I never want to repaint. It's rather close to image 7, a little lighter maybe. I love brown walls, anywhere!

How about offering last-minute to put a family member up as they pass through the area...and they don't tell you until they are leaving that they have bed bugs at their home, and found one in your guest bed that morning.

Long story short, after spending hundreds of dollars on exterminating (none of which did they offer to reimburse) we ended up burning the box spring/mattress. My husband plans to turn the former guest room into a bar/video game room =D

NO MORE GUESTS. EVER.
