HAHA I have to admit, it's a guilty Muslim pleasure to see all of the holiday decorations, and especially the lights because even when we put up our own during Ramadan, it's nothing compared to what most people do, and certainly not comparable to an entire neighborhood's worth! You just need unity is all, and a change of pallet. Target has star-shaped white lights that would be fun. Add some garland and some winter-themed decorations to the shelves (like santas, snow globes, and so on and so forth) in front of your stuff :) The other option would be to use furniture tacks to create curtains the length of the shelves, and tie them back with some decorative cords and tassels. Then you could add matching curtains, a throw, and decorative pillows to your furniture. Maybe even a cheap rug (which you can often get in places like Walmart *shudder*). When it's not Christmas though, consider changing your color pallet to something lighter. You don't have enough light in this room for such dark furniture. You can paint your shelves and add either furniture covers or large throws and pillows to your couch. Tips For Decorating Bookshelves for the Holidays? Good Questions |

Can you put them ribbons and hang the ribbons in a decorative way? Or you could pin them to things, like hats (hanging them up in a nice way), or to the shirt of a stuffed animal or doll collection. Ideas for Displaying a Political Button Collection in Non-Cheesy Way? Good Questions |

Actually, smoking is not a right, nor does it come with assumed rights. A police officer, for example, can by law make a person put out their cigarette, because it's a work hazard for the officer. Children under 12 cannot be in a vehicle with a smoking person. This isn't about smell. It's about health. Help! Smoking Dilemma Dividing the Condo Community Good Questions |

I agree, area rug, drapes, and maybe a mint green/sage green wall. At first I was thinking a deep rose accent wall, but I can't tell what shade your yellow walls are and I think it would clash. If you're going to do 80's Victorian, go all out, but if you only go halfway, it's going to look disorganized. Don't forget those 2D homemade stuffed cats and frilly valance. I agree that you have to go with your element of design- line, shape texture, value (light), etc. If you look at each element and examine what role it plays in your setup, you'll have a successful assembly. It's easy to make everything "smooth" when you have a white room, but you have to shake it up a bit! Get some furry throws or a furry carpet and some vanilla sparkle lights, maybe even some paper lanterns. I saw some pussy willows with vanilla lights on them at TJ Maxx that were just GORGEOUS! It's surprising to me that no one has actually commented on what they speculated the original purpose for this cupboard to be. The reason why cupboards were so shallow in old homes is because there used to be a tax on any "room" that a person could fit in standing. I'm not sure as to the exact name of the tax, but you can imagine not wanting to be taxed for an entire room, when all you have is a closet. I agree that this would be a great place for a pantry, especially if you do glass canned goods like we do, and I also agree that this should be wallpapered something totally insane. Without sounding like too much of an art teacher, this would be a GREAT place to either keep storm/emergency supplies or TOOLS! put a bunch of hooks in there and hang up your tools and put little drawers for smaller things. You could also use it as a place to store your gift accessories, such as wrapping paper, bags and ribbons. Martha Stewart has many an article on accessories that can be used to condense a wrapping station. You could stand up your wrapping paper, hang your bags and ribbons, etc. You can hang things vertically like tissue paper by using mail-catchers (those things you hang on the wall to dump your mail into). I had this problem. I think it helps to remember the elements of design, especially texture and pattern. I spruced up my place with a fancy armchair and throw pillows for my sofa to match, a bright area rug, eye-catching curtain assemblies, an antique bureau turned into an entertainment center, and a few pieces of salvage furniture that I painted with a pop of color. I never ordered furniture through a company or catalog shopped, but I DID make sure that everything that stayed, I loved. In my opinion, poor design is something you can't stand, and something that isn't functional. How To Be Original in "Cookie Cutter" Apartment? Good Questions |
