The trick for a relaxing day-off is not feel guilty about not being productive. I don't know how many days-off I relaxed and recharged only to spend the evening feeling guilty about not getting things done.

Well done. Lots of charm. I love your back deck. As a city dweller myself, I understand how welcomed it is to have a lovely outdoor space to relax.

I'm hosting a Mother's Day dinner tonight. It's going to be simple because of various dietary restrictions. Cauliflower soup, roasted chicken, asparagus, potatoes, and lemon cookies for dessert.

There's a line in the movie, WONDER BOYS, when Michael Douglas breaks into his in-laws' home with Tobey Maguire and Michael Douglas describes the home as the type of place you want to wake-up in on Christmas morning. Your house encapsulates that sentiment. It's a warm, lovely, cozy home. I'm sure your daughter will have wonderful memories of growing-up in your house, much as you have great memories of your childhood. Well done.

This weekend marks the opening of many Farmers' Markets here in Chicago. I'm hoping to score some great asparagus and make some fabulous tomato-asparugus soup. It's still a little chilly and blustery here and some soup will hit the spot.

I have lived on a farm, small towns, small cities, and since I was 18, large cities. I am a city girl, through and through. The worst place I lived was the farm. You are far away from EVERYTHING. There is no such thing as running to the store to pick-up a gallon of milk. If you run out, forget about it, until your next trip into town. Plus, there was so much loneliness during summer breaks. I was an only child. And, there were no other kids my age living in a mile-and-a-half radius of my house. There was no such thing as playing with other kids in summer. It's just yourself. My cousins grew-up in Chicago. I was so jealous of them living in the city with the ability to walk/bike to a park to play, to friends houses, to stores, to restaurants. As they got older, they were able to hop on the bus and hangout downtown. It seemed such an ideal life to me.

Small towns and small cities can be nice. It depends where you live. College towns are the best for outsiders. They are more open to new people. Small towns, especially, can be incestuous. If your family is not a local family, you will always be regarded suspiciously. Plus, there is far more culture in college towns. As I've gotten older, I have softened on my view about living in small towns and small cities. I do fantasize, on occasion, about living in a house where I can have a garden. It is far too expensive for me to have this in the city. If I lived in a smaller town, I could afford this; however, the only type of small town/city I would consider, would be a college town.

What a coincidence. I bought this print at the Renegade Winter Market in Chicago this past year. I finally had it framed and just hung it last night.

The beeper commercial also provided a glimpse to another (thankfully) bygone sound relic: the car alarm. I remember countless nights, particularly summer nights when the windows were open, not being able to fall asleep because some car's alarm was continuously going off or a loud noise, like thunder, would set off the alarms of cars which were parked on the block. Ugh! I'm so glad that trend has waned.

Supposedly, a snowstorm is forecasted for Sunday. What a great excuse to stay inside and make some mushroom risotto.

Thanks! My furniture belonged to my grandmother. She bought it in the '30s when she first was married. It makes me happy to know that a little bit of her surrounds me every day.

This is something I wish I would've taken into account when I bought my condo: accessibility and privacy of any outdoor space. I share my back porch, and only outdoor space, with my next door neighbor. The way the porches are configured, only their kitchen window and door overlook the porch; meanwhile, my bathroom, kitchen window, and master bedroom windows overlook the porch. My neighbors smoke and have a dog, which means, they are on the porch at all hours of the day and night. It's not so bad during the winter but jaw-clenching, teeth-gritting, horrible in the summer when the windows are open. The noise and smoke seeping into my home from them makes me hate my otherwise lovely home.
