Interesting idea for an article, and it was fun to have a chance to look at the room before reading the name of its occupant. I think I could have identified Flannery O'Connor's room as hers even without the crutches, it look so much like my idea of her. But Proust's made me twitch with claustrophobia....

There is no breakfast that can't be improved by the presence of an avocado, even if you just eat it off a spoon. My mother's all-time favorite is toast with avocado and tomato, topped with cheddar and broiled in a toaster oven until the cheese melts... yum.

I like modern furniture when it's good, but wow, that original is just breathtakingly hideous -- kudos to you for seeing past the horrible surface! It's infinitely more appealing in the after; I like that slightly unexpected peacock blue and the crystal handles, and you can see the lines of the piece so much better. I personally find the distressing distracting, but like the above poster I'm just not a fan of that look. Great save, Cassie! I hope you enjoy living with it.

Abode is the wrong word, but that's a lovely little office (annex? fortress of solitude?). The indigo stainless and the charred wood are beautiful together, and I like the way they used the stone garden to reinforce its separation from the rest of the yard.

That's beautiful. I would assume the lego is either heavily reinforced or a shell over stronger building materials? I remember the fate of all those towers I built as a kid...

That is one seriously dramatic improvement, and while the 'before' shot was taken before the separate furniture upgrades, I can understand the appeal of using it -- the four-poster/ceiling fan intersection must have been driving them nuts.

When it comes to flooring, pet hair is indeed easier to remove but also much more noticeable on wood or tile than it is on carpet or rugs... for what it's worth, I did well with a black animal and an oatmeal-ish speckled rug for years.

If you prefer a fabric-covered couch, my experience has been that it's less important to match the color of your pet than it is to choose non-solids: tweed, a mottled color or a fine allover print have all worked for me at various times.

Leather, if you like it, won't repel fur but only collects it in crevices -- less disturbing on a daily basis as long as you vacuum weekly. My own feeling on slipcovers is that they add as much work as they eliminate... you still have to de-fur or wash them regularly, and most of them don't look so good after that. Good luck, and cute dog!

Love the blue elephant... the proportion of the new shade is a harder sell. Would altering the shade in the first picture be an option? Dye, perhaps?

I can only think of a few shopping-list items that Have to be a certain brand... Lea & Perrins for Worcestershire sauce is one. Huy Fong brand Sriracha is another (I probably love the rooster as much as the sauce). I will unhappily live without most dried herbs and spices until I have time to make a trip to the Spice House. And while I always have a revolving collection of various mustard types, if there is no jar of plain old Maille Dijon then I'm 'out of mustard'.

I love the original scent of Purex laundry detergent, but it's become harder and harder to find.

Just lovely; congratulations on your find.

@Graphist: for what it's worth, that's the traditional placement pattern for pulls on that double drawer on top/single on the bottom style of dresser -- I grew up with one just like it, so it looks more natural to me (and easier to operate in terms of leverage) than two straight rows would be.

Good idea, those little rugs! It's now been almost a year since my last pet died, leaving me the only shedder in the house, but before that I periodically sprinkled catnip in the cat's bed. Over time it became his favorite spot and so the place he shed most, and I just threw it in the wash periodically. Any extra fluff vacuumed up off the couch easily.

This discussion is absolutely wild to me.

I recently had a conversation with a Canadian recently imported to the US, who was horrified about the shoe thing. I grew up in Michigan where people often remove snow boots in the foyer, because... they're covered in snow. But no one ever *asked* me to remove my shoes, and when snow was not involved I was never aware of any convention that suggested most people would, or should, leave shoes at the door.

I now live in an apartment with light-colored carpeting and generally remove my own shoes in the foyer, but my own sense of hospitality and politeness would be seriously violated by demanding that my guests conform to my custom. When I invite someone to my home, I want them to be comfortable -- that means I serve them what *they* like, not what *I* like, we do things we *both* like, and if I spot the rug later, what's the big deal?

Personally, I'd be inclined to leave the cabinets alone; painting them is so labor intensive, and there's potential for disaster if your landlord's idea of a successful job is different than yours. But I don't think they're a bad color anyway, on their own -- the problem with the brown is the battle between the cabinets and the floor. If you paint the walls a nice clean mid-tone, the cabinets could be quite nice.

I'd put my money into covering the floor, either with vinyl used as above or with a rug. Somewhere on this site there's a tutorial on stitching multiples rag throw rugs together to make a larger rug, and that you can almost do for the price of a dinner out.

I agree that you're going to want a couch -- a smallish one, maybe even a love seat. But it's hard to tell exactly how much space you have, which changes things a lot. Do you know the dimensions of the room?

Do you sew often enough that you want the sewing station to be there all the time? If so, you might give up the left-hand wall to workspaces and storage and face your seating area toward the fireplace. Or, you could turn it to face the wall to the left of the fireplace.

Do you need your desk to be near a bookshelf, or does it not matter? Does the kitchenette have to stay where it is?

As a child, I wouldn't have enjoyed sitting across from myself nightly in that dining room... but then, I don't really like hanging pictures of people who live in the house.

The clothing on the wallpaper children looks as if the picture dates to the 30s-40s; I wonder if the girls might be older relatives of the resident? That seems sweeter to me, and easier to live with (at least for a while).
