Although I have followed the other Renovation Diaries with great interest, this is the one that really resonates for me. I did a gut renovation of my prewar Upper West Side co-op apartment last year, and I can really relates to the concerns about affecting the neighbors and the building. I actually found the stress about affecting others to be more intense than the stress of my own project. Hang in there, Jennifer, it really does all work out in the end!

I don't understand the method that involves baking soda followed by vinegar. Baking soda is a base (bicarbonate) and vinegar is an acid, so they neutralize each other to form... water. The big reaction that you see is just the neutralization reaction that produces plain old water.

I agree with many of the above comments that the simple elegance of this space is breathtaking. It is rare indeed for me to see an aesthetic that matches my own in a house tour. Bravo!
