My rent is $50 dollar more than 30% of me and my partner's income, I'm actually kind of reassured by that fact... now if only we could get our eating out spending under control...

Ok, I take the wall painting back... but you could add some better lighting and pull up the carpet if you don't like it! I think that painting the fireplace could really change the space as well.

I would paint the paneling and/or the brick in a much lighter color. If you don't like carpet (I wouldn't) and you pull it up only to find plywood, that's ok, you can paint it too! I agree that you should leave the ceiling as is, though. I can definitely imagine this space being a lot brighter and lighter with some paint.

That crib is a gorgeous piece of furniture, and so is the rocking chair! I hope that the chair isn't one of the pieces of furniture that you can't sit on; if it is, please get it fixed, it's amazing.

My parents enforced table manners with me; close your mouth when you chew, no singing at the table, sit up straight and facing the table, and no elbows on the table. For some reason or another, my brother (seven years younger) rebelled against them from day 1, and now when I'm at their house, I feel uncomfortable because of the lack of rules. Almost every time my brother come backs from swim team practice, he leaves empty slurpees on the sink in our shared bathroom. I don't know how he gets away with things like that.

Also, for some reason, having clear counters for me, is more important than having all the dishes clean. As a kid (and to this day) I think the dishes get done at least once a day, but it doesn't have to be immediate!

6 Dumb Household Rules You Hated Growing Up, but Now Totally Understand

As someone who grew up in a house with disgusting, stained and dust-mite harboring 70's yellow/orange and blue shag carpet... wall-to-wall carpet is an absolute no-go. I will never choose carpet over hardwood or other kind of solid floor, except for maybe linoleum? I don't like how linoleum gets sticky. I value warm feet, but I have slippers and plenty of rugs that are easily removed from the floor and taken outside to have the dust and dirt beaten out of them.

Apart from that, I don't hate plastic plants, but I don't really want them either. The rest aren't really bad either, but I prefer a nice patterned rug over a cowhide.

To each his own. If carpet makes you happy, go for it! I personally like the fact that I don't have to shampoo any carpets...

So much beautiful wood! I love your home. The only thing I don't think I will ever get is why people like having fake moose/deer/other trophy animals on the wall, and why it is a thing at the moment.

I like basically everything else about their place, though! Fantastic.

Bonne Maman jars are a godsend! Personally, I only buy glass canisters/large jars for bulk storage like rice, lentils/beans, flour & sugar... I find the open shelving trend attractive, but I know that less-used items would start to get a thin flim of gunk after a while, just like anything exposed and not routinely cleaned in a kitchen... so I'll trade less cleaning for cabinets with doors.

I like to boil ginger for tea, and drink it with honey. Simple, but really delicious. I don't know if this will help or not, but I hope it does!

When I was a kid, my favorite cereal was Berry Berry Kix. I also really like Froot Loops, Frosted Flakes and Special K.

In the interim, I LOVED Team Cheerios and now they're gone!

Since college, I've been a fan of Oatmeal Squares, Frosted Shredded Wheat, Life and Honey Bunches of Oats (especially the one with almond slivers!)

In France, I like Bjorg Superfruit Muesli with plain yogurt and honey. Best Muesli ever...

I was a lifeguard for several summers. Last year, during my 40-hour weeks outside, I drank at least twice the normal recommended daily water, and on the hot days, brought a cooler for my guards full of gatorade, water and ice and took quick dips in the pool - staying in the pool for too long makes the water less refreshing. Getting out right away means the water is evaporating off of your skin, which cools you down in the same way that sweat does. I also walked around really slowly and stayed in the shade when I could. It can be bearable!

Stay cool, everyone!

I like the contract idea, and the mom has a lot of good points, but not being able to bring it to school? It's a phone, and if you're paying that much for your son to have a smart phone, he should use it outside of the house. Otherwise, get him an iPod touch, seriously!

Half the reason my parents got me a phone was to locate me and pick me up from after-school stuff. Granted, it wasn't a smart phone... or even a cool phone. It was my dad's old enormous Nokia, and I was permitted to call my parents, or other people in an emergency, no texting... however, I did get to play snake, which was great.
