Um silly question: how do these attach to the walls? Because in every rental apartment I've lived in, you can't do anything to the walls - not even blu-tack.

I think the problem is compounded by your brown couch. Recover that and inject some colour into the room and I don't think you'd focus on the trim so much.

Basil is the *only* thing I can successfully grow. But I love nipping out to the garden and cutting it up fresh. What a wonderful aroma.

I would: 1. Put the desk against the wall on the left hand side as you walk in. This means you can put down any mail, keys etc., as you walk in. 2. Leave the TV bench where it is in the photo. 3. Move the 1st couch pictured as far left as it will go (remove that left hand side table). 4. Add the 2nd couch in perpendicular to the first couch looking out to the windows. So you're forming a U shape with the 2 couches and the TV bench. I would also look for a dining table that is rectangular instead of square and put it in this position (http://www.tangkoko.co.uk/images/m_brahma--crossed-legs-dining-table.jpg) behind that 2nd couch.

The one thing you need if you're going to put your laptop on a desk is something to raise the monitor up so it's at eye level - otherwise, it's just going to kill your back. Of course, my solution is 2 big phone books, hardly stylish, but does the job!

Speaking of clocks, has anyone seen an analog clock (one with hands) that also has an AM/PM marker? I'd like to hang two clocks. One for local time and one for other-side-of-the-world-where-parents-live time.

I agree with removing the wall cabinets and replacing with open shelving. Also an island of some sort, like Ikea's Varde free-standing system. Replace the kitchen table with a wooden table closer to the blinds' shade and some nicer modern chairs. Then add some colour! On the open shelves, some pottery or china pieces; a plant or herbs on the counter top; table runners and placemats on the table.

I agree with the posters that said go back at another time, particularly night time, and definitely saturday night to see just how noisy it is.

Another thing I despise is bad layouts. I went to see one apartment where you had to walk through the laundry, then the bathroom to get to the bedroom. It was awful.
