After moving to Northern Wisconsin, I almost never went shopping, since everything closed by 5pm anyways. But that savings was somewhat counteracted by the new expenses of gas and groceries. Because of shipping, that must be done via truck, isn't en route to anywhere else, everything that comes from somewhere else (which is almost everything) is at least 30% more costly.

However, thrift shops, junk shops, and the like were never picked over and still thrift-ly priced. Saw a Berringer bookcase get snatched up for $200. I miss those prices and the northern lights.

They're great, but the weather-treating chemicals on many pallets make them dangerous to work with. Unless I was absolutely certain those pallets aren't soaked in chemicals, I wouldn't use them or let children near them.

Keep your dust jackets, they are definitely needed for possible resale (you never know). Find a local used book seller and ask them to "mylar" your books. They'll maybe charge the cost of the material, a dollar a book, tops. "Mylar" is a clear plastic material book dealers put on dust jackets to protect them. It can save an already badly damaged jacket, so it's highly recommended.

No! And, the kids just learned it's okay to draw on the furniture...Maybe if they organized a design together? Then it was a craft project, rather than just doodling.

I would recommend Half Priced Books, if you have one in the area. They may not give you a ton of money, but the buyers will take everything off your hands and out of your junk room.
