When I make roast chicken, I always steal the oysters before anyone else can get to them. Growing up my mom, brother and I used to fight over who would get the oysters. Why I Secretly Suck on Mango Pits in the Kitchen (And So Should You) |

Growing up my little brother and I had a nanny from Guatemala named Ana. At least once a week Ana would make fresh masa, put aprons on my brother and I and we would all work together making pupusas. We'd dip our hands in a bit of water to keep the masa from sticking as we rolled it into balls, then we'd indent the balls with our finger and fill the little void with queso ranchero. Then we'd roll the balls back up to cover the cheese and slap the masa ball until we had a disc that Ana would fry up. They were such a simple and delicous dish. Ana went back to Guatemala around 10 years ago, but I still think of her everytime I make anything with fresh masa. What's Your Best Kitchen Memory? |

Public Transportation. I moved from Chicago to LA just a year and a half ago and miss the CTA so much. People are such terrible and aggressive drivers in LA, going anywhere is stressful and biking here is downright scary. Driving VS Public Transit: What's Your Preference? |

podcasts! I was having a lot of trouble falling asleep a couple years ago, my mind would race and I'd end up fitfully trying to force myself to sleep for hours. I always set my alarm to go off half an hour before I really need to be up. I spend that half hour cuddling with my boyfriend, Will, and slowly waking up. I am eventually completely awake and head off to the bathroom to get ready for the day while listening to a podcast; This American Life, Savage Love, The Moth, Risk!, Freakonomics, 99% Invisible, the Story Collider, and the highlight of my month Radiolab. Before I leave, I cuddle Will for a moment and kiss him good-bye and wish him a good day. This is the alarm clock for insane little brown boston terrier, Igby, who stretches, jumps up onto the bed, directly onto Will’s chest, and proceeds to lick Will’s face with great fervor from forehead to chin. Having been shoved out of the way by a 22 pound dog, I leave Will at Igby’s mercy and head out the door with a chuckle. A Morning Ritual Challenge |
