This is what an unlimited budget and lack of imagination can produce......color me unimpressed. YAWN.

I am a mid-century modern furnishings design freak and I can honestly say that to me, it doesn't make that much difference as long as the design is appealing to me and the quality is to my standard. As far as I'm concerned, the only persons who are so up in arms over "knockoffs" are those who feel cheated after spending what could possibly be an ungodly sum of money for something that can be had for a hell of a lot less money. How many people besides design afficionados actually bother to check for labels or provenance on a piece of furniture? I want a Saarinen womb chair desperately but I'm in no position to drop more than three grand on one. Hello, knockoff! Having freedom of choice is a wonderful thing, but buyer beware. As for the design snobs, all I can say is I'd feel foolish too if I spent four or five grand on something that has a knockoff selling for a few hundred bucks....the rest of us who live in the real world have to worry about the cost of things.

Five Thousand?!?!?!?!? Sorry, I would expect something FAR more spectacular. It seems like the writer brags about everything being bought on a budget....how does this stuff add up to five grand?

Wow!

We "south of the border" folks could learn a lesson from our neighbors up north.....these modern kitchens are stunning and they LOOK very rich and luxurious.(If I'm spending a ton of money on a kitchen reno, I want it to look like I spent a ton of money.) The problem with American cabinetry is that all the modern stuff is either cheap looking or it isn't truly contemporary modern.....they are more of a "transitional" modern.

Luckily for Torontonians, the housing market is still rather robust, with values remaining constant. Canada never got caught up in the housing bubble that has so many Americans in over their heads. In other words, a $75,000 kitchen renovation will still bring a good return on investment.

I just checked out this product at Home Depot today and I'm looking forward to ordering it for a home renovation project. I am thoroughly impressed with the realism of the patterns....I'm going with the "cork" floor. I priced out various options including bamboo and natural cork and the cost of the materials (I'm looking to install about 1300 square feet) was prohibitive. The Allure product looks EXACTLY the same as the natural item and costs less than half. What a deal.

Was the track system easy to install? I'm purchasing a new home and would like to use the Kvartal system but I wasn't sure how well it would cover a large expanse of space. I've made up my mind now...thank you so much!

My 2009 Ikea catalog is already shredded with tons of missing pages....so many great ideas for my new home. I can't wait to actually purchase the items and use them. Thank you, Ikea, for making great design affordable!

UGH! in a few years we will look back at this contrivance as an emblem of the excesses of the early millenium years. Frankly, this is something I'd expect to see in Architectural Digest........need I say more?

I bought a home in a depressed city (Niagara Falls, New York) and have to say that it was the best money I have ever spent. All of my friends and family are so impressed with the home without even considering that it only cost me $55,000.
My money bought me an all-brick two-family home on a half-acre city lot with two car garage. The home is in magnificent condition and I can afford to splurge on furnishings, rather than sinking my entire paycheck into mortgage payments or paying for expensive repairs.

I'm so happy with my purchase that I am now considering another home close by.....it's a 2200 square-foot home, custom-built in 1952. Asking price? $66,000! I am already picturing my extensive collection of mid-century modern furnishings in the house.

My first big-name, big-dollar acquisition was an Eames Lounge chair and ottoman. I won it from highbrowfurniture.com's "Love at first sit" sweepstakes two years ago.

I've been "forced" to upgrade my collection since.

True "design within reach" is no further than your local thrift shop, antiques store or estate and tag sales. The prices are far less (usually) and yo can feel good about the whole "green" aspect of recycling rather than buying new. Vintage is usually far more stylish and far better quality.

I ordered samples of this item from FLOR and I can honestly say that the designs are wonderful; very authentic mid-century modern in bright colors. The quality of the FLOR materials of this particular item leave much to be desired. I thought the texture of the tiles bore a close resemblance to flocked wallpaper. The texture is not smooth and silky; it feels scratchy and thin and is not very cushiony. These may make a great piece of art but they leave a bit to be desired as far as being a high-quality rug. I also think that they are rather overpriced, considering the quality.

Are you interested in renting out your bathroom? I could live in it! I am assuming that it is original vintage; it's absolutely stunning!

Is your kitchen floor Armstrong Excelon? I'm thinking of replacing my floor and love the look of solid vinyl but I'm afraid of the upkeep; how do you keep it so polished and shiny?

Try covering accoustic ceiling tiles in cotton batting and a dark, nubby fabric or black patent leather. Staple the fabric to the tiles and affix the tiles to your walls with strips of Velcro. This will add texture, color, depth, and a very tailored look to the room. You could even use a dark nubby silk fabric if you want to go all out.

As far as the rug, find either a flokati or a sheepskin rug; you want something deep and luxurious and not too precious....this is going to be a "Man's room," right?

Storage unit? I'd have a carpenter make three flush doors and turn it into a nifty cabinet. It could be used for an entertainment system and clothes storage. I'd hang a big, thick-framed mirror above it.

One more suggestion, if you're really daring: paint the ceiling using Ralph Lauren Regent Metallics paint in "parlor gold." It will be stunning.

Good luck and have fun!
