There are a bunch of apps that already do this, though, like GoEuro or Waymate. I think they didn't do very much market research. :)

Why take our comments so personally? If you like electric blue (even though it is certainly not a period appropriate color for the early 60s) then so be it. It is your right to do what you like with your own pieces, whether it was the "only option" or not. It is everyone else's right to agree or disagree with your choice, and comment on your choice in a public forum if you choose to post your projects in a public forum.

If you're going to share your project with others in hopes of receiving validation and praise, you simply must accept the fact that some people will disagree with your choices, and some others will do a better job than you and thus receive more praise. Taking this personally is a recipe for madness.

Before & After: A Marvelous Mid-Century Modern Make-Under

This is exactly what I think of when I see people painting mid-century furniture. 5 years down the line it will be out on the curb, and simply thrown away unless someone with a good eye and the patience to do the job right picks it up first.

@Ophelia Ginger - You read my mind.

(I should mention that this was in New Hampshire, before we moved to Berlin, and we had no trouble selling our house.)

What's Better in Small Kitchen: More Cabinets or Full-Size Fridge? Good Questions

Why not have the best of both worlds and go with a slim, counter-depth fridge? We had the LG LBN10551SW in our house. It looks really really nice and has a ton of storage space, but it's only 24" wide and it's counter depth so it doesn't take up too much room in the kitchen.

We found the capacity to be more than enough for the two of us, and we cooked a lot and had a CSA share.

I feel like a distinction should be drawn between Primrose Hill and the rest of Camden. Where I used to live (Mornington Crescent) was nowhere near as posh as Primrose Hill -- though it was pretty expensive for me as a student at the time, at £450 per month for my single room.

It's sort of like conflating Park Slope with Windsor Terrace in Brooklyn. Sure, they're within walking distance and they border the same park. But the inhabitants, the amenities, and the housing stock are pretty different.

If you're on the fence about it before you even begin, it is better to sell off the cabinet as-is, and purchase something you really love with the proceeds.

Gorgeous!! I'm so happy to see that you salvaged the part of the beautiful wood that was salvageable, and let it shine through. The white trim makes a really nice contrast.

Sand and paint the cabinets, get some new appliances, and perhaps replace the countertops on the sink/stove side with some nice Ikea butcher block. A nicer kitchen faucet would be a nice-to-have as well.

$300 for cabinet paint/supplies
$400 for stove
$500 for fridge
$300 for butcher block + mounting supplies,
$500 for extra nice things like a new sink and faucet, or room paint, or pretty handles for the cabinets

If you shop eBay or sales at your local home center (or Craigslist) it is not difficult to find materials for this price. Of course if there's anything structurally wrong with the walls or plumbing or electrical, the whole $2000 is going to be eaten up by that.

Awesome! Love how you made it a whole new piece.

You have to drive miles and miles and miles to go anywhere, burning up 10x more fossil fuels than you ever consumed in the city.

It's easy to get bored and lonely with no one else around, and a night out with a dinner and a movie becomes a big plan with a big trip, rather than something you can enjoy spontaneously.

Sometimes (or oftentimes) people in small towns aren't very accepting of the strange new people who moved into their town from the big city.

Gardening and livestock raising is actually very expensive, especially when you're just getting started, and the first few years you'll be paying twice what you would at a grocery store, if you consider the money and effort that goes into raising the food on your plate.

All these and more are why we couldn't wait to return to the big city less than 18 months after we moved to the country. Now we're in Berlin and couldn't be happier.

Also... why are you taking out the beautiful built-in bench, but then adding seating back into the room for $250? It makes no sense whatsoever.

Before you build a closet over the window, cover the window up with black plastic for a week and see if you really can live without the light. I'll bet you can't.

As several others have said above, THIS is why you do not paint wood furniture.

Could you give a weight measurement for the flour? Measuring liquids in cups is ok, but flour measurements are so variable that weighing is usually the best method.

The lovely wood grain on the drawer fronts, which was in great condition, has been completely covered over. Paint the rest of the piece if you really feel you need to, but why cover over the table's best feature?!

We had a house in the states before we moved to Berlin. WORST. DECISION. EVER. Sure, the mortgage payments were cheaper than renting, but if you add up all of the deferred maintenance costs from items our accredited home inspector didn't find, we took an absolute bath on the house.

Being "able to do what you want" with a house is always subject to limitations that you have no idea of when you buy. It's simply not worth the price of admission, and we will never buy a home again.
