i like the idea of using paper pinned to the tiles with little map tacks in the same color, then carefully replacing the tiles neatly in the frame. i hate how dingy those tiles look & how sloppily they've been installed, yowza.

i'd use a color like light blue or something - and pretty please don't paint your walls a dark color, i think it'll make your sleeping area look like a cave - unless your garden level pad gets a lot of light, i'd stick to a pale blue or green to play off your cute bedspread.

No Elizabeth Diller because her partner is a dude or because her work is too esoteric?

A lighter yellow off the wall, or a clean white marble to match the trim. Go simple & modern. Offset the river rock as much as possible.

A few years ago, I worked at an interior design practice / storefront. We carried Matouk's cable knit throws -- I still have mine (bought with my Christmas bonus employee discount mind you) almost seven years later and its in great shape. Soft, quality yarn, washes like a dream. I'm totally in favor of DIY, but I think a cable knit throw is an investment piece. So cozy.

I have one designer knockoff. It's a Barcelona loveseat. I needed something to seat two and didn't care for the daybed, and loved the Bauhaus Modernism of the Barcelona chair. It's a knockoff I can stand behind, because it riffs off the original. And the loveseat was like, $500 or so brand new, free shipping. I don't like to buy used upholstery, I have nightmares about bed bugs.

This is what it looks like, though this isn't the site I bought it at. Loveseat GIF

I paid like $150 a Euro-to-US converter for this
Pigeon Light,
because I thought the design was so clever it deserved to be rewarded. And so clever no one's knocked it off yet. It's an excellent bedside lamp. But it was way out of my budget & is the only light I've ever actually spent more than $10 on.

I'm a designer, I think it's important to support other designers. And I'm building a baby collection, you know. It's equally important to riff / build off of old designs. I don't know about the legal aspects of this, but I feel morally content with my design decisions. I don't know if there really is a high ground with this, in any case. I think people who buy fiberglass Eames repros are foolish because they're following a fetishization of the original whilst the actual philosophies are being ignored.

Everything else in my house, with the exception of IKEA bedslats & an IKEA closet (and some string lamps, yannoooh), is a street find, salvaged or I made it myself. My coffee table in front of the Barcelona sofa is, sad to say, a piece of masonite scrap on CMU blocks and my dining room table is acrylic scrap over found redwood frames.

if you want a more real one, buy a recyclable plastic one

the eames' were all about sustainable methods & the decision to switch from fiberglass to polyprop [i think] was one based on ecological decisions

be true to the concept not the aesthetic!!!!

@ ebrown--
toward the end of ray eames life, she began really developing a specific interest in sustainability. their son gave a series of lectures @ DWR stores across the country & mentioned that both ray & charles supported new modes of production-- and probably would have been in support of the far less toxic, & recyclable plastic chairs.

i am impressed at the novel powdercoating technique & the surprising yet classic silhouettes of the pieces, but the colors are hideous.

Really and truly wreck the work, turning it from timeless to dated. Like, it looks like it's from Screech's bedroom or something....I guess Dustin Diamond IS from Wisconsin.....

i like the couches pictured. didn't know the historical precedent for the design choice---but i love that. wouldn't do it on something new, but if i found a beautiful antique with partial wear, i think i'd pick a beautifully coordinating fabric to reupholster the worn out bits.

the french studio i stayed in had a bathroom / kitchen, replete with hot plate & minifridge

its not a big deal if you keep your dishes put away, close the loo when you flush & consume outside the lavatory.

olive oil will rot after a couple of months.

i would not use it to polish furniture. icky.

i think some of these suggestions would work best with the zest or rind of citrus fruit, not the juice itself (i.e. making a zest scrubs for body & home)

there was a project in readymade or maybe on instructables for turning a semi obsolete laptop into a media deck in your living room--i thought that was really wonderful & clever, it even had a sliding shelf for a keyboard & the screen was separated from the keyboard/drive & mounted on the wall...

i think the problem with cnc & felt is that the fibers of the felt will wrap around the bit---maybe laser cut felt in the same shape then adhered to the cnc piece?

i like richard sweeney's models too, ive been his flickr contact for awhile & his work is really inspirational.

revolutionary new tectonics, keep up the good work.

love it----trubridge did a studio at my school (california college of the arts) & the students made a lot of similar pieces to the coffee table prototype... is this laser? cnc? diecut?

and yes....cat houses would be fantastic---with some scratching post inside or some components made of feltboard or something....
