A beautiful rug, and I agree with small lightweight pieces. Maybe the two chairs with a small table & lamps in the middle against the window wall. Or a low daybed/bench, a mirror above with flanking small pedestal tables & plants. Embrace what it is... a living HALL.

I agree with most posts. Keep the neutral duvet cover, and add color with accessories. I suggest brighter throw pillows and coordinating lampshades. Perhaps the added color could be a cherry red or a jewel-toned deep purple?

Take a peek at the Tylosand series from Ikea. You could use the footstool pieces for the low portion, and the chaise or loveseat pieces for the portions with a back. All pieces come with hooks that hook them together from underneath, so that they are all rearrangeable.
I used to have only a 8'-0" couch made of these pieces, and added two one-seat pieces, with a footstool on the end to make an "L" when I moved to a larger apartment.

I suggest something clean and curvy. Take a look at the Resin Ball Lampbase from Urban Outfitters. It'll cleanly make the transition from the traditional chair to your modern side table, and you can easily pair it with any color or neutral lampshade.

Mine is in a little metal cart, below counter level. I need all the space that I can get! For the day that I can design my own kitchen, the microwave oven drawer from SHARP is on my list!

Beautiful house. I love the simplicity. A recommendation to make rooms feel warm and brighter, would be to stay away from colors with blue undertones. Blue tends to absorb daylight.
