I am an observant Jew, and this criticism is warranted. I clicked through hoping to find a recipe for Passover. It's disappointing and frustrating. I for one do not have a good cocktail for Passover; kosher for Passover wine is what I drink. It would be nice to actually have a kosher for Passover cocktail recipe.

I am grateful for this post as I am going through a sudden divorce myself. Unlike Maxwell, my ex chose to disappear almost completely from his child's life.

I don't care whether the apartment is "stylish" and has been straightened or no - what we see here is a cozy, comfortable nest a loving father has built for his child and himself. Kudos, Maxwell, and rock on.

@parnassus:
I think that sunlight makes a huge difference in colors appearing tasteful or garish. The closer to the Equator, the more intense colors can be.

Or you can make a reverse argument, that cheerful colors are needed in the absence of sun. When first visiting Bergen I was struck by the beautiful, vivid paint colors of the buildings; here is a photo: http://www.timagesgallery.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Norway.jpg

This is cultural.

I mentioned the picture because babies differ. Mine was/is mechanically oriented, so he quickly figured out he could rattle the crib and make things fall. He flailed when changed, randomly reached for objects on the changing table and Did Things to them, chewed the crib, and learned to pull himself up and throw things on the floor that I thought were out of his reach! I know many much more placid babies.

It's beautiful, but much about this setup screams "first time parents." The changing "system" is impractical - try to change a flaily, squirmy baby on that thing. The baby will chew the pom poms off the blanket, and his new goal in life might well become pulling that picture off the wall.
Beautiful, though.

This is a good post. I am a minimalist, but my soon-to-be-ex-husband has major hoarding tendencies. He cannot shop without buying a ton of things, buying in bulk (things that will spoil and/or are unneeded), etc. I am unhappy about the divorce, but the aspect of doing my own thing shopping-wise will be a great relief to me.

I strive to only buy things that are vintage, well-made, and needed. I deviate from this when it comes to clothing, being on the verge of a plus size means that I am not able to thrift all my clothes.

I never shop at Target, Walmart, etc. Those stores are overwhelming.and ugly and trick you into buying cheap crap. I buy from locally owned stores. Exceptions are groceries when the farmer's market is not in season. There is a lovely local co-op in town; I shop there, but I cannot afford to buy everything there. I am now rearranging my spending so I can buy everything there.

Which is not to say I do not spend. My biggest weakness is art. My second-biggest weakness is food; I like to eat out :( My project for 2013 as I rebuild after the end of my relationship would be to cook at home much more. I love cooking from scratch, I just need to reconnect to that.

This is wonderful. My little boy though has a dairy allergy - do you have any ideas what I can substitute instead of cheese and creme fraiche - or perhaps suggest a filling that does not include these? (Almond milk works well instead of milk...)
Thank you!!

4 Goals to Boost Happiness at Home
in the New Year

I've lived all over the world and in all kinds of areas - big cities, medium cities, a city by the sea, rural/country, etc. Currently live in a small college town in the Midwest. It's absolutely perfect for this stage of my life. Great restaurants and coffeeshops, though there are not many of them; locally grown veggies from the farmer's market are delicious; university, with endless wonderful events; cost of living is cheap; silence and the beautiful starry sky. In the winter there is snow and fire in the fireplace. I miss my cities, but not enough to miss the horrible air, the stress, and the constant worrying about money.

Eventually I would like to live in a cabin in the woods.

Why Does My Partner Watch Porn?
Answers to all the questions you've ever wanted to ask about your relationships

@Maria7403 please let's not have this discussion on AT. AT is about design. DESIGN.

If you google, you will undoubtedly find countless discussions about porn elsewhere. This one is trite and repetitive and there is absolutely nothing new in it, but that's not its biggest issue. Its biggest issue is the general inappropriateness of this article to the AT's mission.

I remember an article from ages ago about furniture specifically designed for sex (in 2008, I think). It wasn't my favorite thing, but it was appropriate for AT because it discussed furniture. This one does not even discuss furniture.

AT should remain focused on design if it wants to retain and attract readers. I've been an AT fan for many, many years, but don't come here for porn or discussions of porn. There's porn enough on the internet already.

For some people "grownup" means a formal living room like the one depicted in a photograph above. Personally, I would not live in such an environment, would not even be comfortable as a guest in such an environment.

I don't have a matching set of glassware (always intend to buy one, fail). There is a nice set of dishes, but they come from my mother. There are enough towels and sheets for guests, but they do not match. My home is not grown-up. At times it is cluttered and in dire need of straightening. At other times it is pristine and airy. There is not a single piece of furniture in here that is not vintage, with the exception of my son's bed; and except that bed, nothing cost more than 200$ on the outside.

But! My home has wonderful architecture, it's warm and full of beautifully designed and/or handmade things, it reflects my personality and creates a lovely haven for my family. The glassware I have might not match, but it is all hand-blown. My pantry is well-stocked, and I cook delicious meals in the red Le Creuset pot I bought with my first fiction sale. There is wonderful art and pieces of hand-carved wood, a tapestry and vintage blankets, and a small batallion of books. There are fresh flowers in a handblown glass.vase.

I am 35 and do not ever see myself changing. I will eventually buy some "grown-up" pieces of furniture, but I never see myself living 'formally'. But I'm happy with my home.

Do You Live In A Grownup House?
4/28/12 3:35 AM

Heh. I live in an architect-designed mid-century home that I got for cheap because nobody here understands MCM. I live with MCM furniture, all of it thrifted. There is also a craigslist sofa and ten IKEA bookshelves full of books.

As long as I live in this house, I will live with my MCM pieces. I love them, the house loves them. I couldn't care less if it's overdone on AT or in New York or in some other place, and I couldn't care less what some trendsetter at Elle Decor thinks. If I ever relocate to a stately Victorian, I will likely acquire some different pieces. It's al about the space.

Major kudos to Elisa for the patient and careful work restoring this beauty to its former glory.
