We have been living in Sydney for five years and this is what is working for us.

A scheduled weekly Skype session with Grandma where the kids talk about their week. Two blogs, one family only with video and lots of photos. Lots of tidbits on FB. An annual photo calendar with the highlights of the year. Holiday and "just because" cards and packages. Using online stores to send gifts for birthdays and special occasions. Since my husband is Dutch and I am American, we alternate visiting "home" so that we are only doing one massive trip a year.

Even with all of that, we are working on a move closer to home because 24+ hours of travel time to family, plus missing out on friends' lives is more than we want to sacrifice, even for a fantastic lifestyle.

It is surprising to see such a bold color in a Dutch house! I also have a Dutch husband and while he might wear the loudest colors, he was unused to having bold colors on walls. Now his clothes have toned down and we have a yellow and white striped wall. :) Great way to bring happy into the gray!

We hear the laughter from this park at our house. One of my favorite aspects not shown, is a large field with small hills (mountains to children), with a tree planted at the top of each one. It is very whimsical.

There are shaded areas, especially the sand area where the youngest children tend to play. In Australia we "slip, slop, slap" sunscreen every time we're outside (for better or for worse). Parents don't leave the house without sunscreen, hats, and water.

This park caters to a wide range of ages and abilities and it is still in development. My kids love it.
