I would use wood dowels like the ikea ones- I picked up a "Doweling Accessories Kit" at Harbor Freight that has all the tools needed to do this- drill bit, dowels etc for $3.99. Drill holes in the table top, drill holes in the storage unit (I would drill these close to the corner edges) and put the dowels in the holes- you can add glue if you want to make it more permanent. Also, IKEA doesn't sell it's PS line in all it's stores here in the USA- in the Stoughton store which is the store closest to Boston they don't sell most of it. I would kill for somethings in that line but really can't drive to New York for them! All Ikea Stores Are Not Created Equal |

I disagree with everyone saying not to paint. Paint is what ties a house together and makes it personal. I would totally take advantage of the picture rail and the molding and paint different colors. I love the idea of doing a bold color on the ceiling and something else above picture rail and I agree with others who say take a piece from the room and try and incorporate those colors. The shelves are attached to the walls, they were screwed into the studs at an angle from below so they look like they are floating. There is wire running down the front but it is decorative. Also, make sure it isn't a ceiling that was painted with calcimine. This was a type of paint used in days of yore and it is impossible to paint over, the paint will always peel away (usually in large pieces) The picture doesn't look like it, but do a little research.
