I agree that I think the lighting doesn't do this entry justice. It feels really cramped to me, but I bet it's more cozy in person.

I agree with tara: get a sublet and look for yourself. I also (somewhat) disagree with bepsf (which is rare...): it's totally possible to move here without a firm job offer, but have an exit strategy. When I moved here 7 years ago, I had $5k saved which was enough for rent and living expenses for about 3 months. I had no job and no friends but I was determined to make it work, and I knew that if it didn't, I'd just pack my car and move again to somewhere cheaper. I worked a few odd jobs while looking for something permanent and was on my feet within the first two months. It can be done.

Your ceiling looks a little low for pendant lamps. I'd do two dome ceiling fixtures (agree with the others on having these hard wired) on a dimmer for overall ambient lighting on either end of the room, then add in floor and table lamps to brighten the spaces where you'll read, etc.

I listen to podcasts while I clean. I find that a good, engrossing episode of This American Life makes an hour of cleaning fly by. The podcasts are so much more distracting than music, so I'm not actually able to think things like: "why don't we just have a cleaning lady?" or "how is it possible that a shower could accumulate this much soap scum in a month?"

I love my linen sheets, but didn't for the first few months that I owned them. They get much much better with washings and wear. They started out a little scratchy.

The best is that they stay nice and cool in hot weather.

Yeah, this sounds like a horrible idea that's sure to end badly no matter how you slice it. Decorate around what you've got, or forfeit your security deposit and risk landlord wrath.

I would really like to see someone actually make it through this routine in five minutes. Maybe AT will follow this up with a video feature with a ticking clock in the corner a la "24?"

The bathroom is the one place that I don't cut corners. 30 minutes, every Saturday morning with daily maintenance as required -- and the suggestion that cleaning the floor with a wipe qualifies as "daily maintenance" is ridiculous. It's time well-spent.

Looks super cozy and I love the style, but it's not an option for pet owners. Can you imagine trying to get dog hair off of that comforter?

It's nice to be reminded that there is a way to use wallpaper that is reserved and classy rather than dated and stuffy.

It's a campground near Coloma...up off hwy 50 near the El Dorado National Forest. Not Colma...home to Target and cemeteries. :)
