I can relate ...
I have just painted a few old wooden crates to hang on a wall. I haven't installed them yet because they look so bad on that particular wall and any other wall in my house. Simply too big.

I mostly bring home stones from places I visited, but from Kenya I brought tiny inedible berries that local people use to make jewelry. They are purple and as tough as a rock.

18 months ago we bought twelve Mutina dechiré deor tiles (50 x 50 cm square) by Patricia Urquiola in an outlet tile store for 60 euros. A great find because these tiles are not cheap: in 2010 retail price was €127,95 per sqm.

I don't quite understand the 'lack of character' remark in the article. You can add character to a kitchen in many ways, not just hardware knick knacks on the counter.
As for practicality: my sister has a minimalist kitchen and I can assure you it is as practical as a kitchen with pulls and latches.

I would have an expert check how old your tiles are. When we bought our house all the rooms on the first floor had acoustic tiles on the ceiling. We had them checked by a building inspector who told us that our tiles were from the 1970s and would melt in case of fire. So we had our dangerous tiles removed and the ceiling drywalled.

Well done! It feels really cozy. Maybe you could echo the coral (or is it red) of your beautiful painting somewhere in the room to really finish it off. Like a pillow or a toy?
